Daily Deal: Special rates for Legoland California Hotel opening

March 13, 2013|By Mary Forgione | Los Angeles Times Daily Travel & Deal blogger

Are you a knight, a pirate or an adventurer? Those are the room themes offered at the new Legoland California Hotel in Carlsbad, Calif., that's set to open ahead of schedule on April 5. Pick your favorite theme and reserve a room starting at $149 a night and a kid-friendly package starting at $209 a night.

The deal: The three-story, 250-room hotel will feature more than 3,400 models made from 3 million Lego bricks, a company statement says. Smoke-breathing dragons, a Castle Play area and a pool are some of the amenities that come with a stay at this amusement park hotel. Rooms sleep up to five people, with a separate area for adults, and bunk beds and a pull-out bed for kids. And there's a treasure hunt activity for children in every room.

The Kids Stay & Play Free package includes a free two-day ticket for children 3 to 12 years old (Resort Hopper or Sea Life Hopper) with each adult full-priced ticket. Kids also get free breakfast with a paid adult breakfast.

When: The Kids Stay & Play Free package is good through March 30 for stays from April 8 to June 20. The $149 room price is good indefinitely. Both are subject to availability.

Tested: I checked online and found room only and package rates to be the same price on random dates in April. For example, the best available room rate and the kids package cost $259 on April 13 (Saturday stay) and $199 on April 14 (Sunday stay), the latter being slightly lower than the advertised rate. (Prices don't include tax and $20 nightly resort fee.)

Clearly on those dates, the package is the better deal (you save $96 to $102 on tickets per child), unless you happen to have season passes and don't need the free tickets. I also found the cheapest rooms -- $149 best available rate (plus tax and fee) -- available midweek in November and December.
