“The Book of Mormon” and “Once,” Broadway musicals that dominated the two most recent Tony Awards, will come to Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa during the three-venue complex’s 2013-14 season.
Bernadette Peters (Oct. 11) and Patti LuPone (March 22, 2014) are the season’s top Broadway concert divas, each performing in Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis plays Segerstrom Concert Hall (March 14, 2014), and five other jazz offerings are set for the 500-seat Samueli Theater.
The Center’s signature international dance series will offer four programs, including the world premiere of “Diana Vishneva: On the Edge” (Nov. 6-10), in which the star ballerina (pictured) will dance new works tailored for her by Carolyn Carlson and Jean-Christophe Maillot. Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo will give Maillot’s interpretation of “Swan Lake” its American premiere (Feb. 27-March 2, 2014).
Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev will team for a mixed program that includes a scene from “La Bayadere” and the world premiere of a piece by the dancers’ American Ballet Theater colleague, Marcelo Gomes (Jan. 24-26, 2014). Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performs highlights from its repertoire (March 27-30, 2014).
“The Book of Mormon” (May 13-25, 2014) and “Once” (Aug. 19-31, 2014) highlight a season’s roster of 11 musicals in the center’s biggest venue, 3,000-seat Segerstrom Hall. “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” (Oct. 22-27), “I Love Lucy Live on Stage” (March 18-23, 2014) “Ghost: the Musical” (July 22-Aug. 3, 2014) and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production of “The Wizard of Oz” (Feb. 11-23, 2014) will be first-time arrivals in Costa Mesa. There’s also a new touring production of Webber and Tim Rice’s “Evita,” (Dec. 10-22).
Returning touring shows are “Jersey Boys,” (June 24-July 13, 2014) “Chicago” (Jan. 28-Feb. 2, 2014) “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” (Jan. 14-19, 2014) and “Mamma Mia!” (April 8-13, 2014).
Opera fans who miss Opera Pacific, the center’s resident company that folded in 2008, will have the consolation of three operas in concert form at Segerstrom Concert Hall: two by Los Angeles Opera, presented by the Segerstrom Center, and one under the aegis of the Pacific Symphony, which announced its own season separately earlier this month.
During its fully staged run of “Falstaff” at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (Nov. 9-Dec. 1), L.A. Opera will hop on the freeways to render Verdi’s opera in concert form in O.C. on Nov. 26, helping to mark the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth. It’ll do the same for Jules Massenet’s “Thais” (May 27, 2014), with Placido Domingo starring as the monk Athanael opposite soprano Nino Machaidze as the titular courtesan. The fully-staged L.A. version runs May 17-June 7, 2014.
Pacific Symphony’s Verdi outing will be three performances of “La Traviata” (Feb. 20-25, 2014).
Film music is the focus of the orchestra’s annual American Composers’ Festival (May 8-10, 2014), featuring works by contemporary composers Elliot Goldenthal and Hans Zimmer and classic film composer Bernard Herrmann.
Featured soloists in Pacific Symphony’s season at Segerstrom Concert Hall are violinists Sarah Chang (April 10-12, 2014) and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg (Jan. 9-11, 2014), and pianists Conrad Tao (Sept. 26-28), Joyce Yang (Dec. 12-14), Alexander Toradze (Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2014) and Yulianna Avdeeva (March-27-29, 2014).
The Segerstrom Center-presented classical series in Samueli Theater offers one-nighters with the Pacifica Quartet with Marc-Andre Hamelin (Oct. 6), Jeffrey Kahane, Joseph Swenson and Carter Brey (Dec. 12), Emerson String Quartet (Jan. 10, 2014), St. Lawrence String Quartet (Feb. 20, 2014) and Philharmonia Baroque Chamber Players (March 16, 2014).
Another Segerstrom Center classical music tenant, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, announced its 2013-14 season in January.
Samueli Theater jazz concerts are ACS: Geri Allen, Terry Lyne Carrington and Esperanza Spalding (Oct. 25-26), McCoy Tyner and Joe Lovano (Jan. 17-18, 2014) and Segerstrom Center debuts for Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club (Sept.17), organist Dr. Lonnie Smith (Feb. 21-22, 2014) and the Fred Hersch Trio (May 2-3, 2014).
Samueli Theater cabaret shows are Marilyn Maye and Clint Holmes (Nov. 14-16), Peter Gallagher (Feb. 13-15, 2014) and Jimmy Webb and Maureen McGovern (April 11-13, 2014).
