A robbery suspect died of wounds sustained in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning in the skid row area of downtown L.A., authorities said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. No officers were injured in the incident.

The shooting was reported around 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of 5th and Wall streets.

Sources familiar with the case said undercover officers saw a man armed with a handgun inside the Green Apple Market in the 300 block of East 5th Street.

Authorities are still piecing together what happened, but according to preliminary reports, the man left the market and a first round of shots was fired.

The suspect then ran 100 yards on 5th Street, where he encountered additional officers, leading to a second volley of gunfire by police.
