Cancun tops the popularity chart with Memorial Day travelers bound for Mexico this year, according to statistics compiled by travel website Kayak.com.

“Cancun, San Jose Cabo, Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City are among the top Mexico destinations for both Memorial Day and summer travel," said Maria Katime, a Kayak spokesperson, who added that Cancun and San Jose Cabo hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.

"Of these hot spots, Mexico City is the cheapest, with average airfares of $473 for summer and $394 for Memorial Day weekend."

Kayak, which allows users to compare multiple travel sites at once, charts trending destinations nationally and internationally and also keeps track of prices passengers are paying for tickets.

The website's statistics show that Guadalajara saw the biggest recent airfare increase in North America, 13%, with the average airfare totaling $477.

•    San Jose Cabo, average airfare $513
