New Zealand popmeister Neil Finn will return to action with a new solo album, “Dizzy Heights,” scheduled for release Feb. 10, but he’ll preview some of the new material earlier with a handful of solo shows including an L.A. stop on Nov. 19 at Largo at the Coronet.

The Crowded House chief songwriter and frontman, and former member of Split Enz with his older brother Tim Finn, said the new album, which he co-produced with Dave Fridmann, defied some of the conventions of a bandleader doing a solo recording.

“I didn’t want to make it a solo record in a stripped back singer-songwriter sort of way,” Finn said. “I had a feeling Dave would be good at adding some odd shapes to the music, which I always welcome—making things a little more expansive. He is good at subverting things, and making things sound a bit messed up and not as obvious, rather than being too tasteful, which is always a temptation.”

That’s evident in the first track to be released, “Divebomber,” for which an atmospheric video merging images of kids jumping off rocks into water below with clouds replacing the water, has premiered on Finn’s official YouTube channel.

Finn announced the album, his first solo effort since “The Sun Came Out” in 2009, and played three songs from it during a recent webcast with BrooklynVegan. The album can be pre-ordered here.

Here’s the video for “Divebomber,” the title of which is an homage to a World War II film of the same name. It’s also streaming over Finn’s official YouTube channel here.
