Two people were injured when a driver smashed into a bus bench in East Los Angeles and allegedly fled on foot, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday evening.

The two victims were described as a man and a woman and were taken to a hospital, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. There were no immediate details on their injuries.

The SUV slammed into the bench at Atlantic and Whittier boulevards at 5:18 p.m., the CHP said.

Rescue vehicles responded to the busy intersection and firefighters appeared to remove one of the victims from beneath the SUV, according to television news footage.

The driver was described by the CHP as Latino, about 5-feet 9-inches tall and 25- to 30-years-old.
