Los Angeles Police Department officers fatally shot a man in North Hollywood on Friday night after responding to reports that an individual was walking down the street with a gun and disturbing the peace, authorities said.

Shortly before 8 p.m., a caller reported that a man with a gun was walking near Burbank Boulevard and Riverton Avenue, said Sgt. Ernie Fischer of the LAPD’s North Hollywood Station.

Two officers responded in a squad car, Fischer said, and encountered the man.

According to Officer Cleon Joseph of LAPD Media Relations, the man was holding a semiautomatic pistol and turned toward officers, who shot him.

“He was engaged by the officers and fatally shot,” Fischer said.

The suspect, described as a male between 20 and 25 years old, was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Fischer said.

Police at the scene reportedly recovered a gun, he said. No other details were immediately available about the shooting, pending an investigation.
