Live updates -- government shutdown Day 2: Pushing Boehner to act

October 02, 2013|By Times Staff Writers

On Day 2 of the government shutdown, Democrats pushed House Speaker John Boehner to pass a no-strings bill to end the impasse while the White House called for a meeting of top congressional leaders.

Meanwhile, employees remained furloughed, national parks closed, veterans' latest claims unprocessed and other so-called nonessential functions of the government stalled.

The cutoff in funding for much of the government started Tuesday with the GOP move to kill or delay Obamacare. On Tuesday night, the House GOP made a bid to reopen selected parts of government. That effort failed, with Democrats saying they wouldn't pick winners and losers among federal services.

President Obama has put off part of his trip to Asia next week, a sign that the White House foresees the shutdown lingering.
