Travis Kvapil, a driver in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series, was arrested after an alleged dispute with his wife in Mooresville, N.C., the Mooresville Police Department said Wednesday.

Kvapil, 37, was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of assault on a female and false imprisonment after officers "responded to the Kvapil residence following a 911 phone call regarding an assault," the police department said in a statement.

He was taken to Iredell County Jail, police said. Kvapil later was freed on bond, USA Today reported.

Mooresville is just north of Charlotte, where most NASCAR teams are based and where many of the sport's drivers reside.

Kvapil drives the No. 93 Toyota in the Cup series forĀ  BK Racing. The Wisconsin native is 31st in the series standings after finishing 26th in Sunday's race at Kansas Speedway. He does not have a top-10 finish this season.

Kvapil overall has 240 career starts in the Cup series, with seven top-10 finishes but no victories. Before reaching NASCAR's premier series, Kvapil was the 2003 champion in NASCAR's truck-racing series.

Kvapil and his wife, Jennifer, have three children, according to his website.
