The problems are stacking up for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith.

Smith has been charged with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a party at his home in June 2012.

He is on indefinite leave of absence from the team while he undergoes treatment for substance abuse, a development that came after his DUI arrest last month.

The Santa Clara County district attorney's office said Smith, 24, is expected to surrender on his own this month.

Smith set a 49ers record with 19 1/2 sacks last season, and Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday the two have exchanged text messages.

"Heard that things are going very well," Harbaugh said. "Very positive reports back."
