October 12, 2013|By Eric Sondheimer

Birmingham was supposed to coast to the West Valley League championship. Somebody didn't tell the players at Granada Hills (2-4), which stunned the Patriots, 22-15, on Friday night in a league opener.

Ramon Johnson passed for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Willmore caught eight passes for 90 yards and one touchdown. Birmingham (3-3) couldn't hold on to a 15-0 lead and made five turnovers.

Another upset was Carson defeating San Pedro, 27-21, in a Marine League opener. The Colts started the season 0-4 and have won two in a row.

Bernstein (5-1) stopped a two-point conversion attempt with 20 seconds left to hold off Torres, 19-18, in a Central League opener. Sophomore defensive end Jordy Gomez stuffed up a run.

Garfield knocked off its second unbeaten team, defeating South East, 21-14, in a Eastern League game. Sophomore Joseph Silva had a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown. Ty'Jon Delancy scored touchdowns on runs of two and nine yards.
