USC quarterback Max Wittek remains ready if needed.

In the days leading up to last season's game against Notre Dame, Wittek was preparing for his first career start.

Now he is Cody Kessler's backup.

"I just take every day like I'm needed," Wittek said. "You never know when I'm going to have to come into the game."

Wittek started in place of injured Matt Barkley against then top-ranked Notre Dame and completed 14 of 23 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown, with two passes intercepted, in a 22-13 loss.

What advice would he offer Kessler, who will start on Saturday night against the Fighting Irish?

"Take the mind-set that there is no real big game on the schedule so that you keep yourself calm," Wittek said. "He doesn't have to do anything different than he has been for the past couple weeks. He's been playing well. He's been hitting open receivers. Just keep playing his game."

Wittek said he would remain ready.

"I got an opportunity last year," he said, "and there's nothing that says it isn't going to happen again."
