Cody Kessler has been named USC's starting quarterback, Coach Lane Kiffin announced Monday.

Kessler, a third-year sophomore from Bakersfield, will be under center on Saturday when the Trojans play host to Boston College at noon.

Kiffin is expected to explain his reasons for choosing Kessler over Max Wittek in a video USCĀ planned to release later Monday, the school said.

Kessler started in the 30-13 season-opening victory over Hawaii and the Trojans' 10-7 loss to Washington State. But he shared time with Wittek.

In just more than four quarters, Kessler completed 18 of 32 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown, with two interceptions. He also rushed for a touchdown.

Wittek completed eight of 18 passes for 90 yards, with one interception.

USC, which has not completed a pass of more than 19 yards, passed for only 54 yards against Washington State. The Trojansā€™ longest completion covered eight yards.
