OAKLAND - This city's beleaguered Police Department entered 2013 in full defensive mode. The crime rate had soared. Staffing was off sharply. And memories of the heavy-handed police response to Occupy protests 14 months earlier - and the lawsuits it generated - remained fresh. Scrambling for a turnaround, elected leaders hired out-of-state consultants to overhaul policing strategy and launched the first new police academies in years to beef up the force. The federal judge overseeing a settlement agreement over racial profiling and the beating and framing of suspects named a compliance director, giving him near-total control over the department.

The large pictures on the wall at the Lakers' facility show Kobe Bryant elevating for a shot by the basket, Pau Gasol driving the baseline against Al Horford and even Ryan Kelly lofting a mid-range jumper in an exhibition game. No pics of Kendall Marshall. Yet. You can't really blame the Lakers, who had no reason to attach themselves to a player who might not have made it out of January with them. But then Friday night happened, Marshall becoming the first Lakers player since 2002 to get 20 points and 15 assists in a game.

The draw will produce eight groups of four teams.

It was both eerie and gripping to watch the smart new true-crime drama "Blue Caprice" just days after the shooting rampage at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. Loosely based on the 2002 Beltway shootings - 13 killed or injured by sniper fire - director Alexandre Moors' stylish first feature unfolds like a procedural. Yellow crime tape and draped bodies to start, then a shift to dissect the criminal minds, rather than the crime. An alliance between 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo and angry ex-soldier John Allen Muhammad proved deadly.

HOUSTON -- C.J. Wilson threw seven strong innings, and Josh Hamilton snapped a tie with a run-scoring double in the eighth inning to lead the Angels to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park on Sunday. The win completed a three-game sweep of the Astros, who had won seven of their first 10 games against the Angels this season, and came on the heels of a three-game sweep at Detroit. It was the Angels' first 6-0 road trip since Sept. 3-8, 2002, when they swept series at Tampa Bay and Baltimore.

This post has been updated. Please see below for details. Even at the worst of times, one facet of the Alice in Chains saga was never in doubt: the longtime friendship of founding members Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney. The guitarist and drummer met when the hard-rock band formed in 1987 and have grown only closer through the years of success and tragedy. "He's my absolute best friend," says Cantrell, 47, the band's guitarist and co-vocalist. "I've never been committed to anything for this long through the good and the bad. And we're still doing this, which says a lot. It's meaningful.
