The Department of Defense said Sunday that four of five soldiers killed Thursday in south Baghdad called Southern California home. The dead Southern California soldiers were Army Pfc. Cory F. Hiltz, 20, of La Verne.; Sgt. Shin W. Kim, 23, of Fullerton; Sgt. Michael J. Martinez, 24, of Chula Vista; and Sgt. Giann Carlo Joya Mendoza, 27, of North Hollywood. The fifth soldier, Spc. Dustin L. Workman II, 19, came from Greenwood, Neb.

Two American soldiers have been charged with negligent homicide for hitting two South Korean girls with their armored vehicle, the U.S. military said, reversing an earlier decision not to prosecute the men. The deaths had touched off near-daily anti-U.S. protests. South Korean activists demanded an apology and a South Korean trial of the two soldiers. Sgts.
