SAN ANTONIO - The script felt familiar enough, complete with a dog-eared corner or two, that it had to be true. LeBron James answered his critics, once again. It never used to happen this way. James used to fold into himself, the setting and the stakes too much for him. There was the championship sweep in 2007 by San Antonio when he was still in Cleveland. There was his eight-point effort in Game 4 of the NBA Finals two years ago against Dallas, the Heat ultimately losing to the Mavericks.

ARDMORE, Pa. - Wednesday was a beautiful day at the Merion Golf Club. Soft clouds, perfect temperature, gently cooling breezes. It was also the day before the U.S. Golf Assn., the diabolical mastermind of the U.S. Open, hands 150 players blindfolds and offers each a final puff on a cigarette. The 113th edition of this annual golf agony is meant, as always, to make the greatest golfers in the world feel as if they are wearing starched underwear. Mike Davis, executive director of the USGA, summed up nicely Wednesday morning.

SAN ANTONIO -- LeBron James guaranteed he would play better. He did. But who knew Dwyane Wade would practically steal the show with 32 points, ignoring his injured right knee and guaranteeing with his play that the NBA Finals would return to Miami next week. Wade made 14 of 25 shots as Miami beat San Antonio, 109-93, in Game 4, tying the series at two games each. James was there, too, pushing the ball mercilessly and taking run after run at the basket with success Thursday at AT&T Center.

We're at the point where any San Diego Chargers victory can be summarized in two words. This goes back to Nov. 19, when between updates I saw a 24-7 San Diego deficit against Denver turn into a 35-27 Chargers victory and I text-messaged a friend to ask what happened. My buddy's reply: "LT happened." Flash-forward to Sunday, when the Chargers had to deal with a strong Oakland Raiders defensive effort, a shaky performance by quarterback Philip Rivers and a 14-7 Raiders lead in the fourth quarter.

Seaweed can shrink your waistline. Grow your hair. Bring down your blood pressure along with your blood sugar. Build up the strength of your bones and your brain. Make your joints stop aching and your bowels get moving. Give cancer short shrift, and give cellulite and wrinkles the old heave-ho. That is, if you believe the hype - only some of which is backed up by reliable evidence. The data are strongest that seaweed can reduce inflammation, premenstrual syndrome symptoms and even the growth of tumors (in animals)

Philip Mendel prides himself on being the sort of a guy who plans ahead. So he purchased a $100,000 life insurance policy in 1988 to cover any costs that would come up in the event of his untimely demise. "I didn't want this to be something my wife would have to worry about," Mendel, 74, of Mission Viejo, told me. "I wanted her to have something to be able to put me away. " Now he and his wife are both worried. The insurer, Conseco Life Insurance Co., has informed Mendel that to maintain his current level of coverage, his monthly premium would have to rise to $510 from $25. "I told them they've got to be kidding," he said.

The lending landscape shifted measurably this month when the standard-bearer for first-time buyers and low-to-moderate income borrowers became more expensive than its private business counterpart. On April 1, fees for low-down-payment mortgages insured by the Federal Housing Administration rose for the third time in two years. The hike in fees serves a twofold purpose: to help shore up the FHA's sagging mortgage insurance fund, which is dangerously low; and to reduce the government's footprint in the mortgage market.

SAN ANTONIO - Embittered by the first three games of the NBA Finals, LeBron James guaranteed he would play better in Game 4. He was right. But who knew Dwyane Wade would practically steal the show with 32 points, ignoring his aching right knee and guaranteeing with his play that the Finals would return to Miami next week? Wade made 14 of 25 shots and had six steals as Miami beat San Antonio on Thursday, 109-93, wrenching back home-court advantage and tying the series at 2-2. BOX SCORE: Miami 109, San Antonio 93 James was there too, taking run after run at the basket with success at the AT&T Center.

Dwyane Wade's knee seemed fine for the moment. So did Chris Bosh's game and LeBron James' legacy. The Miami Heat evened the NBA Finals with a crushing 103-84 victory Sunday over San Antonio in Game 2 at American Airlines Arena. It started with a ridiculous 33-5 run past the midpoint of the third quarter that never seemed to let up, the Spurs looking nothing like the team that won the opener. BOX SCORE: Miami 103, San Antonio 84 Wade had called it a "must-win" game a day earlier, and he was right.

Spending in the hotly contested two-year race for Los Angeles mayor exceeded $33 million on Saturday, breaking previous records as unlimited outside money continued to play a dominant role in Tuesday's contest. Candidate super PACs and so-called "independent expenditure" donors, which do not have to abide by the city's campaign contribution limits, provided 41% of the $25.6-million total raised just for candidates Wendy Greuel and Eric Garcetti since the contest began in March 2011, according to campaign reports.

Khalfani Muhammad of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame has never faced a camera he didn't like or taken on an opponent he didn't want to beat. That made Saturday's Southern Section track and field championships the ideal environment for Muhammad to put on a show. Facing competition from some rising young sprinters, Muhammad made it clear he's not ready to relinquish his title as fastest teenager in California. He ran a wind-aided personal best 10.33 seconds to capture the Division 3 100 meters.

Innocence meets experience, unconvincingly, in the strained redemption drama "33 Postcards. " The movie's awkward mix of familiar setups finds a teenage orphan from China on the sorta-mean streets of Sydney, Australia, inspiring hope in a criminal who has long since repented for his sins. The involvement of Guy Pearce - one of the best, if most unsung, actors of his generation - is among the film's many bafflements. Sixteen-year-old Mei Mei (Zhu Lin) has spent most of her life in a peaceful valley in Zhejiang province.

PARIS - There was never any question that the Spanish national anthem would be played for the French Open men's singles winner Sunday. And for most tennis watchers, there was no doubt which Spaniard would be the one to hold the trophy aloft. Rafael Nadal cemented his reputation as the sport's greatest-ever exponent on clay by scything down countryman David Ferrer, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, to harvest a record-extending eighth French Open title. No man has ever claimed the same Grand Slam tournament as many times, or won as many matches, 59, on the red clay of Paris.

Some athletes are turning to a lip-puckering remedy for post-workout pain and weakness: tart cherry juice. The juice can be hard to swallow, but the claim is that it diminishes muscle pain and soreness as well as, or better than, many over-the-counter medications. So far, those claims are mostly anecdotal. The Web is peppered with testimonials of the juice's analgesic powers and rumors of entire football teams guzzling the stuff.
