I agree with Rohrabacher that the now-infamous Andres Serrano crucifix and the photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe are offensive, disgusting and obscene. I also agree with Rohrabacher that the whole sorry episode has convinced me the NEA has proven to be a less-than-perfect federal agency. Well, finally, it's been cleared up. Conservative commentator William F. Buckley writes that he maintains a "continuing enthusiasm" for Newport Beach lawyer C. Christopher Cox's candidacy for the 40th Congressional District. But he disavows the doctoring done to his April 26 endorsement letter by Cox's campaign staff. A postscript on the copies of the Buckley letter that went to voters reads: "P.S. The clipping from Human Events arrived just last week.

For Democratic candidates, the 42nd Congressional District should be as inviting as the Sahara. Republicans hold a 53% to 36% edge in registered voters in the largely coastal district, which stretches south from Torrance to Huntington Beach. The incumbent, Dana Rohrabacher (R-Lomita), is sitting on $100,000 in campaign cash and faces no primary opponent. Despite the adverse conditions, three Democrats--James Cavuoto, Guy C. Kimbrough and Bryan W.

Orange County's leading Republicans gathered for chili and popcorn Sunday afternoon to raise about $50,000 toward Project '90, the statewide GOP plan to take over the Assembly before redistricting in 1990. The money was raised at an auction that saw more than 1,000 items sold for prices ranging from $10 for a 2-by-3-foot oil painting of a matador to $8,000 for a weeklong Caribbean yacht cruise.

Huntington Beach Democrat Guy C. Kimbrough, a candidate in the 42nd Congressional District, said Wednesday that "it is a crime" that millions of Americans are denied adequate medical treatment because they can't afford it. Calling for some sort of federally sponsored health-care program, Kimbrough told a group of students and faculty at Golden West College that in a country with a $4-trillion economy, "it's about time we find a health-care program."

In a marked departure with his local GOP counterparts, congressional candidate Dana Rohrabacher said Friday that he would favor some additional offshore oil and gas drilling along the Orange County coast. Rohrabacher, the Republican candidate in the 42nd Congressional District, said that "with proper environmental protections" there is no reason that more oil and gas drilling should not be done off Orange County in areas where rigs are already in place.
