The Cypress men's basketball team starts Orange Empire Conference play Wednesday on a hot streak. The Chargers, who started 0-5, have won eight of the last 10, including three in a row. Willie Allen leads in scoring at 15 points per game and A.D. Lamoureux (14), Kevin Morris (13) and Frankie Floyd (12) are also in double figures. "Our consistency has been a big part of the turnaround," Coach Paul Bottiaux said.

In Orange Empire Conference women's basketball: Fullerton 69, Riverside 55--Aimme Copp, who made eight of 12 shots from the field, had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Fullerton (16-7, 2-2). Angie Baca made four three-pointers, scoring 17 points and Paola Flores had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets. Santa Ana 72, Saddleback 68--Shanna Renken had 25 points and eight rebounds to lead the Dons (15-2, 4-0). Nekeda Allen had 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for the Dons.

Marshall Freeman and Kenzie Weir each made one free throw in the final 25 seconds to lift Saddleback to a 77-75 victory over Southwestern Sunday in the title game of the Saddleback men's basketball tournament. Freeman, a center, was fouled getting a rebound, and made one of two free throws with 25 seconds left to give Saddleback (3-0) a 76-75 lead. Freeman finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds and made the all-tournament team.

Brandon Hearvey had 21 points to help Irvine Valley beat district-rival Saddleback, 68-64, in an Orange Empire Conference men's basketball game Friday at Saddleback. Guards J.C. Timmons and Allen Fletcher each had 14 points for Irvine Valley (15-5, 2-0), which led at the half, 33-32. Saddleback's Leif Kemp had 17 points on eight-of-12 shooting from the field before fouling out with 2 minutes 20 seconds left. Kemp was one of three Saddleback starters to foul out.

Irvine Valley took sole possession of first place with a 75-50 victory over cold-shooting Saddleback in an Orange Empire men's basketball game Friday. The teams entered tied for first. Damian Raibon scored 16 and Robert Griffin and Commander King added 11 each for Irvine Valley (18-7, 6-2). The Lasers dominated at the free-throw line, making 26 of 34. Saddleback (10-14, 5-3) was 11 of 18 on free throws, but the Gauchos were 18 of 68 (27%) from the field.

A.D. Lamoureux hit five three-pointers to lead Cypress to its first victory this season with a 92-74 romp over Twentynine Palms in the first round of the Barstow men's basketball tournament. Lamoureux finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds for Cypress (1-5). Willie Allen led the Chargers in scoring with 28 points. In the Grossmont men's basketball tournament: Rancho Santiago 76, Palomar 66--Lohnnie Tape led Rancho Santiago (5-1) with 21 points and eight rebounds.

Golden West dominated the state water polo championships with convincing victories in the men's and women's finals Saturday at Ohlone College. The Rustler men's team capped a perfect season by defeating West Valley, 14-5, winning its ninth consecutive title. Golden West (37-0) was sparked offensively by Boss Veer, who scored a game-high three goals. West Valley was unable to overcome a 5-1 deficit at the end of the first quarter and never threatened.

Brendan Mulligan hit the game-winning basket with four seconds left to give Santa Margarita a 54-52 victory over Camarillo in a semifinal of the San Luis Obispo boys' basketball tournament Friday. Mulligan led Santa Margarita (2-0) with 17 points. Teammate Dennis Keane added 15 points and eight rebounds. In the Brea-Olinda tournament: Esperanza 64, Fullerton 46--Josh Greer led Esperanza with 19 points. Seth Letour scored 18 points for Fullerton.

Defending champion Irvine Valley, Fullerton and Riverside are the favorites when the first round of the Orange Empire Conference men's basketball race begins Wednesday with games at 5:30 p.m. The men play at 7:30 p.m. in the second round. The playoffs start Feb. 27 and the state tournament is March 12-14 at UC Irvine.
