The Los Angeles City Council asked the Airport Commission on Friday to delay a lease at Van Nuys Airport, with Councilwoman Laura Chick saying the eleventh-hour proposal "smacks of back-room, closed-room, dirty deals." The commission is scheduled to vote June 26--four days before Mayor Richard Riordan leaves office--to approve a lease of 5.8 acres of undeveloped land to be used for a new aviation business.

Promoter Bob Arum will file a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court today against Univision Sports and its CEO, Jerry Perenchio, charging both with interfering with his promotional contract with former welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya. Arum's action comes in the wake of the announcement that De La Hoya has hired Perenchio to be his new promoter after suing Arum last month to end their ties.

"I'm looking forward to extending our relationship over the years and hopefully for the rest of my life." Oscar De La Hoya on promoter Jerry Perenchio, Sept. 29, 2000 * Last Tuesday, Oscar De La Hoya terminated that relationship with Jerry Perenchio. Oh well, life can be short, especially when you work for De La Hoya. For the World Boxing Council's super-welterweight champion, a master at reinventing himself, life has, once again, begun anew. He looks like a rock star. Or a dancer. Or maybe someone who should have a white tiger on a leash. In the billboard jungle along the strip, the displays for Oscar De La Hoya's comeback fight Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena are largely indistinguishable from those heralding the performances of Wayne Newton or Danny Gans. Is De La Hoya the Golden Boy of boxing, or a new addition to Siegfried and Roy? Newspaper and magazine ads and television commercials are the same.

Who is Jerry Perenchio? Who is this man who swooped in after a quarter-century hiatus from the boxing business and snatched Oscar De La Hoya, the sport's prize cash cow among nonheavyweight fighters, right out from under promoter Bob Arum, a man who prides himself on being one of boxing's shrewdest operators? If you don't know Perenchio, you're obviously not one of L.A.'

Adding its voice to growing protests, a citizens advisory council recommended Monday that the city delay award of a major lease for new aviation uses at Van Nuys Airport, which is scheduled for June 26, just four days before Mayor Richard Riordan leaves office. One of the potential bidders is a businessman with ties to the mayor, and some critics have questioned the bidding process.
