The pre-game pep talk of L.A. Baptist High basketball Coach Bob Chevalier consisted of circling the number 32 on the locker-room blackboard. His players got the message. It took a strong 32 minutes for the Knights to outlast Paraclete, 88-82, in the championship game of the L.A. Baptist tournament Saturday night. "We [wanted] to prove to ourselves and others what we are about," Chevalier said. "They we're bigger, but we're faster and I thought we could tire them out in a fast game." L.A.

It wasn't easy but L.A. Baptist High is still undefeated. The Knights fought off their most difficult challenge of the season with an 80-78 victory over Canyon on Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the Valencia boys' basketball tournament at Valencia High. Jermaine Sweet scored 26 points and Aaron Davis added 24. Tim Maynard also contributed down the stretch, scoring seven of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. The game was tied, 68-68, with three minutes remaining before L.A.

The Westlake High coach planned to rotate three quarterbacks in Friday night's game against Ventura, just as he did in a lopsided season-opening victory over Buena. But starting quarterback Scott Spruill's performance changed Benkert's mind midstream, as the Warriors rebounded from an early two-touchdown deficit to defeat Ventura, 52-26.
