Access HealthNet Inc., a Westlake Village firm that links doctors, hospitals and clinical laboratories by computer, has been sued by a company that helped it raise $1.6 million in operating funds, according to Michael McMahon, vice president of Access. "We feel the allegations have no merit and we intend to defend ourselves vigorously," McMahon said. He said the suit charges that Access violated an agreement to pay a finder's fee and to reimburse the plaintiffs for public-relations services.

Access HealthNet Inc., a once high-flying Westlake Village provider of high-tech communications systems for the health-care industry, has ceased operations and is seeking to liquidate under federal bankruptcy laws. Access, whose problems surfaced last fall, when its president unexpectedly resigned and losses were announced for its most recent operating periods, had no choice but to seek bankruptcy court protection from its creditors, the company announced.

Keith Berman, Access' president and chief executive, said he expects to install the systems in all 20 hospitals within 18 months.

The Westlake Village-based company said it will receive $520,000 to set up the system and an additional $600,000 to maintain it for four years.

The computer systems allow doctors to receive lab results through their office terminals. In the latest three months, the company earned $268,210, contrasted with a loss of $172,110 a year before. Its quarterly revenue rose 60%, to $1.42 million from $890,918. For the nine months that ended Dec. 31, Access HealthNet had net income of $989,510 and its revenue tripled to $4.

The buying group was led by LifeSciences Technology Partners, an investment firm that specializes in funding health care ventures. The notes and warrants are convertible into 1.67 million shares of Access HealthNet common stock, or 24.1% of the total outstanding.
