An Air Force cruise missile malfunctioned during a test over Utah and crashed in the Great Salt Lake Desert, Hill Air Force Base officials said. No one was hurt when the missile crashed on Bureau of Land Management property near the Goshute Indian Reservation on the Nevada state line, said Tech. Sgt. Timothy Trager.

Five young girls trapped while playing in the trunk of a car died of heat exposure in West Valley City, Utah, police said. Two of the girls were sisters, two were cousins and the fifth was being cared for by the mother of one of the children, said a police spokesman. Temperatures reached the upper 90s in the Salt Lake City area. West Valley City is a southwest suburb. Police said there were no witnesses who saw the girls, between 2 and 6 years old, climb into the trunk.

More than 1,300 people packed a chapel and gymnasium Wednesday for the funeral of five little girls who died of heat stroke Friday after accidentally locking themselves inside a car trunk. "These five little darlings were just being children, and they thrilled at being discovered by a parent in an innocent game of hide-and-seek," said Steve Bullock, a Mormon bishop and friend of one of the grieving families.

American Airlines' chief pilot was killed when he fell while skiing at a Utah resort, authorities said. William A. James, 54, suffered massive head injuries in the fall Saturday at the Deer Valley ski resort southeast of Park City, said a nursing supervisor at University Medical Center. James was a vice president and the chief pilot for American Airlines.
