"It was an honor for me to be the next guy in line to get beaten up by Sam Jackson," says an affable Affion Crockett. It may have been a charge to get tuned up by one of the highest-grossing movie stars ever in "Soul Men," but the even bigger thrill for the lanky, former regular of TV's "Nick Cannon Presents: Wild 'N Out" and hip-hop impressionist was to work with the guy who inadvertently launched his comedy career. "I got started doing Bernie Mac impressions," he says.

The year 2007 has been a vibrant one at the intersection of the black popular sphere and mainstream morals. First came the Imus affair, in which an old white man was lambasted for his use of a derogatory word for women, which he attributed to hip-hop culture. Then, in response to that situation, rap executives were corralled by Oprah Winfrey to defend themselves in an uncomfortable display of cultural class warfare.

Instead, Ric O'Barry, the former dolphin-trainer for the 1960s "Flipper" TV show, played host to a reception Wednesday for some 100 animal-lovers at a Tokyo hotel. On Thursday, he will take a petition signed by 1.7 million people from 155 nations demanding the end of the dolphin hunt to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, escorted by police security.
