With four starters back, there was only one spot open in Cal State Fullerton's basketball lineup this season, Derek Jones' power forward spot. And by the second game, Agee Ward had claimed it. Now, any challenger has to go through him, which won't be particularly easy, considering Ward possesses the largest shorts the Fullerton equipment crew could locate. Ward figures he knows what people think when they see him. At 6-feet-5, he is closer to the height of most guards than most power forwards.

When he's not filling lanes on fast breaks, making spin moves to the basket or going up for rebounds, Cal State Fullerton forward Agee Ward never seems to be in a hurry. Titan Coach John Sneed once described him as "big, slow-movin' Agee," because of his mellow nature and laid-back approach to life. Ward may dazzle fans with his quick, vertical leaping ability, but off the court, he moves like a tortoise. But even by his own slow-motion standards, Ward was moving rather gingerly Monday.

Cal State Fullerton, the team that nearly fell apart two weeks ago, looked and sounded like Team Harmony after Saturday night's 97-79 Big West Conference victory over Fresno State. The same players Titan Coach John Sneed called "selfish and stubborn" after a 64-58 loss to UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 23 have won four of their past six games.

How did Cal State Fullerton forward Agee Ward improve his shooting skills last summer? By whacking a few baseballs around the batting cage, of course. No, this wasn't the most orthodox cross-training program, but it seemed natural to Ward, who, for the first time in many years, spent the summer with his father, Gary Ward, a former major league baseball player who lives in Riverside.

Cal State Fullerton beat the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 127-87, Thursday night in a Titan Gym exhibition game played before about 500 fans and one too many cameramen. Late in the second half, Fullerton coaches discovered a person they didn't recognize videotaping the game from the balcony. According to a Titan staff member, the person was a representative of the University of San Francisco, Fullerton's opponent in Monday night's season opener.

Keith Starr, a Cal State Fullerton assistant basketball coach, has resigned effective immediately, the school announced Friday. Starr, 35, had been a part-time assistant at Nevada Las Vegas for four years and had lived in Las Vegas for 12 years before being named at Fullerton in July. Sources at Fullerton said Starr missed Las Vegas and has returned there to look for a job, possibly outside of coaching. Starr could not be reached for comment Friday.

Cal State Fullerton's Agee Ward stood on the court of the Bren Center after the Titans broke a losing streak at four games with an 86-83 victory over UC Irvine Saturday. He put it in perspective. "Tonight was just like a penicillin shot, just like coach said. It cures everything," Ward said. Fullerton Coach John Sneed would know. He was so ill with an intestinal disorder last week that he spent several hours in a hospital after one of Fullerton's losses. Fullerton's first victory since Dec.

Utah State has dominated Cal State Fullerton in the mountain air of Logan, Utah, but the Aggies haven't had much luck against the Titans lately at sea level. Fullerton controlled the first few minutes of overtime Thursday night en route to a 111-99 Big West Conference victory, the sixth consecutive time the Titans have defeated Utah State at home. Agee Ward scored 31 points, Bruce Bowen 27 and Joe Small 15 for Fullerton, which improved to 8-11, 4-6 in the conference.

Two halves against Pacific were all that inconsistent Cal State Fullerton needed to get a lift again. The Titans' 76-62 victory Thursday night snapped a three-game losing streak before 1,227 at Titan Gym. Fullerton's Agee Ward had 28 points and Sean Williams added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Titans, 11-14 overall and 7-9 in the Big West. Fullerton Coach John Sneed started Greg Vernon in place of Joe Small at shooting guard and said he was pleased with the results.

Junior forward Bruce Bowen scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and senior forward Agee Ward added 23 points during Cal State Fullerton's Blue-Orange scrimmage Friday night in Titan Gym. Fullerton Coach John Sneed tried to balance the teams in the first half, and the blue team led, 48-36, at halftime. Sneed then moved most of his top players to the blue team in the second half, and they ran away for a 108-67 victory.
