Sponsors of Sunday's AIDS Walk benefit took in barely 30% of their $100,000 goal, leaving AIDS Care Inc. officials seeking new fund-raisers to make up the difference, board president Doug Halter said Monday. More than $30,000 will have been collected when all the pledges are received, Halter said. But the shortfall means other events will have to be organized to generate the $300,000 or more the group says it needs to care for its clients.

For Lea Shadburn, Sunday's benefit walk for AIDS stretched much farther than 10 kilometers. The Ventura woman, accompanied by about a dozen family members and friends, was there as a special dedication for her sister, Suzi Morales, who has the virus. "I'm here representing all the people who are losing or have lost someone to AIDS, or has the HIV virus," she said moments before the 10 a.m. start of the 10-K walk.

A donation from a private foundation will buy a year's supply of medicine for a local agency that cares for people with AIDS and HIV. The New Jersey-based Rose Foundation recently gave AIDS Care $10,000 to pay for medication and help house people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, said Executive Director Edie Brown of AIDS Care. "Medication is very expensive," Brown said. "This money will help us rest a little easier about being able to help everyone."

AIDS Care Inc. is banking on the support of Ventura County businesses and residents to raise $100,000 or more in this weekend's AIDS Walk & Run for Life '93, the group's chief fund-raiser that officials hope will generate up to one-third of its annual budget. "It doesn't matter how little you give," said Chairman Jack Finnegan. "A lot of people giving a little bit of money will go a long way. Everyone's contribution is important." The AIDS walk will begin at 10 a.m.
