As the Los Angeles County State Central Committee representative, I protest the uninformed, misinformation about the American Independent Party of California (letter, July 30). Yes, the AIP registration is up, but not because people are wrong or stupid. It is up because people generally agree with our platform on the deficit, on the economy, but most of all on who controls our government, we the people or unresponsive incumbents. Many (myself included) AIPs are saddened by Ross Perot's withdraw as an active candidate, we will continue working to build the volunteer corps and create a creditable alternative to unresponsible incumbent politics that comes at people, not from them.

In Hollywood, the more things change, the more they remain the same. When I was a clueless cub reporter, I did a story on Sam Arkoff, the B-movie impresario behind the fabled American International Pictures, the low-budget assembly line (known as AIP) that churned out hundreds of quickie teen exploitation beach party and horror films. In his office, Arkoff had movie posters adorned with catchy titles and ad slogans.

That John McCain -- he's such a maverick! Just when you thought you had him figured out, McCain threw another curveball -- picking rookie Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, whom he barely knows, as his running mate. As ex-Democrat Joe Lieberman told the Republican convention Tuesday night, everyone recognizes McCain's "record of independence. Uh-huh. Some might call it reckless for a 72-year-old to offer the vice presidency of the United States to someone with as little national experience as Palin.

The long-dormant American Independent Party (AIP) has suddenly come to life. AIP voter registrations are increasing. The reason is simple. People wrongly assume that Ross Perot would be the representative for this party. But Perot was running as an independent. The American Independent Party is the old state's rights, segregationist party founded by George Wallace in the 1960s and has been essentially inactive for over a decade. Those who registered AIP to help Perot would probably be appalled to find they have joined the party of segregationist Wallace and Lester Maddox.

In defending the Apparel Industry Partnership (Commentary, Nov. 16), Kevin Sweeney asks us to believe that it will do everything necessary to eliminate sweatshops except require companies to eventually pay a living wage to their workers. In one of the few areas of the AIP that would definitely cost companies some money, Sweeney claims that it is not their responsibility. He also fails to explain how a company can produce its goods in countries where workers are jailed and even killed for organizing unions and still claim it is in compliance with a code that includes the right to free association and collective bargaining.

Is it any wonder that "Study Finds Fewer Donors to Charity" (Dec. 23)? No sooner do I send a check to a worthy cause then I receive another solicitation. Some years ago, as an experiment and to assuage a guilty conscience for tossing out appeals from so many seemingly worthy causes, I sent a small check to every single charity that solicited me in one week. To this day, I am inundated with requests from groups I never knew existed. I suspect that some of the charities gave my name to others.

Zhang Aiping, 93, the former defense minister of China who managed the country's nuclear bomb program, has died in Beijing. The official New China News Agency said Zhang had been ill, but did not report when he died. Zhang served as defense minister under Deng Xiaoping, who also appointed him head of a commission to modernize the Chinese military. Under his leadership, China tested its first land-based missile with the range to hit targets in the United States in 1980.

If they can remake "Angels in the Outfield" and "Lassie" for the '90s, by gum, they can remake "Confessions of a Sorority Girl" and "Runaway Daughters." Which is just the inevitable exercise that Showtime has undertaken with its new series of Friday night movies, collectively titled "Rebel Highway." The 10 reconstituted titles in this "drive-in pictures" series mostly hail from the vaults of AIP--American International Pictures, a.k.a.
