Booked your summer flights yet? Remember, the best time to lock in your ticket is about seven weeks out. Here are some other suggestions, courtesy of CheapAir.com, which mines its database for trends and pivot points in prices and availability: 1. Check fares early and often The average fare difference between the best day to buy your airline ticket and the worst is $236, the travel site says. Airlines change fares constantly, often many times a week. CheapAir recommends you start checking fares as soon as you know you'll be flying.

Singapore Airlines is offering round-trip winter airfare from Los Angeles to Tokyo starting at $623. The cheap fare means seats are likely to go fast, so book quickly if you want this deal. The deal: The $623 round-trip special airfare includes taxes and fees  so there are no hidden extras. The fine print for this deal says the lowest rate applies to nonstop flights to and from Narita International Airport (NRT) Mondays through Thursdays (though I found the rate available on a Saturday; see below)

This is the stuff spring breaks are made of: super-cheap air-hotel packages to Las Vegas. Yes, most Angelenos drive to Vegas, but with the high price of gas and the low cost of these packages, flying might be a no-brainer -- and a spring break windfall. JetBlue Airways : The airline extended its one-day Madness-in-March sale that started Tuesday until tonight (Wednesday). As I was checking out the sale fares, I stumbled upon an incredible discounted Las Vegas package: $110 per person based on double occupancy from April 8 to 10 that includes two nights at Circus Circus and round-trip airfare from Long Beach.

All this holiday planning has me thinking about packages but not the kind that fit under the tree. For example, a winter-spring package to Tuscany, Italy , neatly wraps up airfare from Los Angeles , a six-night stay and a rental car into one great price starting at $1,039 per person. The deal: The "Tuscany in Spring" package requires four travelers, which could work for family members, two couples or four friends. The price includes round-trip airfare from Los Angeles to Florence; six nights in a two-bedroom apartment at the Fattoria Degli Usignoli resort near Florence; and a mid-sized rental car waiting at the airport.

I love introductory airfares that airlines offer when they start new service because they nearly always involve crazy low prices. Case in point: $149 each way from San Diego to Honolulu this winter after Alaska Airlines starts daily nonstop service in November. Need I say more? The deal : Alaska Airlines' Introducing San Diego to Honolulu fares start at $149 each way plus tax and fees. Yes, this airfare is super-low but my research shows that this price isn't available on all dates.

CHICAGO - Fliers today can find it difficult to keep their options open while trying to get good seats and locking in a good price, especially with airfares changing often and planes more crowded. Nobody wants to buy a $600 nonrefundable ticket, have their plans fall through and not be able to use it - or be forced to pay exorbitant fees to change flights. That's precisely the problem several companies aim to fix. Perhaps it's fitting that Chicago - home of the world's largest exchange for financial options, the Chicago Board Options Exchange - also is home to companies that are selling, or plan to sell, options on airline tickets.

What if they gave a discounted airfare party and everybody came? That’s pretty much what’s been going on Wednesday as many carriers announced sales with just a few days in which to book. Check airline websites for their current specials and remember to read the fine print for minimum stays, days of the week to travel and blackout dates while planning your autumn or winter getaway. Here are some fares I liked. All of them are quoted excluding taxes and fees: Southwest Airlines [(800)
