Domestic airfares have been climbing steadily since 2009, and there was no letup last year. But the uptick in ticket prices was not as steep as in the last few years. Domestic airfares increased 4.2% in 2012 compared with the previous year to an average of $427 per ticket, according to Airlines Reporting Corp., an Arlington, Va., company that completes the financial transactions between 16,000 travel agents and 187 airlines. After fuel prices sent airfares skyrocketing last summer, you may have sworn off travel to Europe. The rule of thumb holds true: If you want to stuff a few extra dollars in your stocking, go in the off-season. Because the weather isn't optimal and there are few school holidays, winter is typically the cheapest time to head to Europe, excluding the holidays.

The average airline ticket price for domestic flights departing in the last two weeks of December was recently $469, a 4% increase over the same period last year, according to ticket sales on Priceline.com, one of the world's largest travel websites. The increase is in line with airfare hikes earlier in the year of about 4%, according to Airlines for America, the trade group for the nation's airlines. A spokeswoman for the trade group said airline prices have not risen as fast as inflation over the last few years.

If you're spending a lot of money on a trip, consider buying travel insurance to protect yourself against the unexpected. Key things to know: • Typically, travel insurance reimburses you for such things as nonrefundable cruise deposits or airfares - and for the cost of rescheduling flights - when weather, illness, natural disaster or terrorism cause your trip to be canceled or delayed. Plans differ slightly from one another, so be sure to read the fine print. • Some policies cover medical expenses incurred outside the United States, and may pay for emergency evacuation in case of a serious injury or health problem.
