It's difficult to know when to buy an airline ticket and when to wait. Some sites offer to guide you on the timing of your purchase. I recently examined the fare prognostication tools used by Kayak and Bing, which advise travelers whether to buy plane tickets while searching those websites or to wait. Both sites use data from scores of past searches to predict whether you're finding a fare at its lowest point or whether it may fall. I examined 10 random routes and dates of travel, and the companies were generally united on their predictions, with one exception: For a hypothetical trip from Los Angeles to Portland, Ore., in mid-April, Bing and Kayak both brought back the same fare - $178 on both Delta and Alaska airlines - but differed in their recommendations.

News that the tiny Samoa-based carrier Samoa Air has begun to charge fares based on the weight of its passengers has some fliers worried that the idea might catch on with other airlines. “There is no doubt in my mind that this is the concept of the future,” said Samoa Air's chief executive, Chris Langton. But industry experts don't think the idea will fly. “Any airline that tries that, heavy people would not fly that airline,” said Jan Brueckner, a UC Irvine economics professor and expert on the airline industry.

I'm not a high roller, so when I visit Las Vegas , it's usually with out-of-town guests on a limited budget. The upfront leg work of checking and rechecking travel websites in search of great prices can be a big time drag. I realized I was running out of time to plan a my sister's two-night birthday trip next week, so I decided to change it up and try something different: a one-stop airline vacation package. It took just 15 minutes to select flights and hotel -- all at a price I liked.

When a trade group for corporate travel managers recently predicted airfares would rise in 2013, the group probably didn't expect the hikes to be launched so quickly. Domestic airfares are expected to jump 4.6% in 2013, and international rates are likely to rise 8.3%, according to a survey of travel managers by the GBTA Foundation, an arm of the Global Business Travel Assn. The group attributed the increase to rising demand from companies that are ready to take advantage of new business opportunities in a strengthening economy.

Domestic airfares have been climbing steadily since 2009, and there was no letup last year. But the uptick in ticket prices was not as steep as in the last few years. Domestic airfares increased 4.2% in 2012 compared with the previous year to an average of $427 per ticket, according to Airlines Reporting Corp., an Arlington, Va., company that completes the financial transactions between 16,000 travel agents and 187 airlines. The good news is that the fare increases have been shrinking.
