If you're headed to Knoxville, perhaps best known as the location of the Tennessee Valley Authority, United has a round-trip from LAX for $283, including all taxes and fees. Knoxville, tucked between the Cumberland and Great Smoky mountains, became home to the TVA when it was established in 1933. The TVA website says the U.S. government-owned corporation "provides electricity for 9 million people in parts of seven Southeastern states. " The airfare to Knoxville is subject to availability and must be purchased at least seven days in advance.

When you go online to search for an airfare, you often see the lowest price appear at the top of your computer screen. But what if your airline search site instead offered you a customized flight package deal - adding extras like wireless Internet access and a seat with extra legroom - based on what you have booked in the past? In the future, airlines will increasingly offer you customized airfares based on detailed information carriers have collected, even data about your income, the neighborhood where you live and your travel patterns, according to industry experts.

Given all the indoor things you can do in New York in chilly weather (theater, museums, shopping), cold may not be a deterrent to this $258 round-trip fare (including all taxes and fees) from Burbank to New York's JFK on United. It might be a bit brisk during the months of this round-trip airfare special from LAX to Warsaw on Aeroflot, but the price will warm your heart: $733, which includes all taxes and fees. It is subject to availability, and you must stay a Saturday night for travel between Jan. 24 and April 12. Warsaw's motto - "It defies the storms" - refers to its tumultuous history (it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, mostly recently during World War II), rather than its weather.

Highlighting airfare sales each week is much appreciated by this reader. I just returned from an impromptu trip to Seattle, which I never would have done before reading about it in a recent Airfares column buried in the back of the Travel section. Not only was the price remarkably inexpensive [$158], but the travel time was very quick: a two-hour flight and no time change. Seattle is a pleasant city and full of friendly faces during a decidedly off-season. Readers should keep an eye on Airfares deals in each week's Travel section.

Complain all you want about the airlines but at least the fares are not on the rise. When adjusted for inflation, domestic airfares dropped 3.6% in the April-through-June period, compared with the same period last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The average domestic fare--including round trips and one-way fares---during that period was $378, compared with the adjusted-for-inflation total of $392 for the same time in 2012, the bureau reported Wednesday.

It might have seemed that some airlines had gone completely nuts over the last couple of weeks. Southwest Airlines recently ran television ads that touted $69 fares, followed by promotions from Virgin America for fares starting at $59. Not to be outdone, Alaska Airlines peddled $49 fares - a deep discount compared with the average one-way domestic fare of about $190. These too-good-to-be-true deals usually come with a slew of restrictions, making them almost useless for most travelers.
