New airline fees could be coming. That's the take of George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com , a low-airfare alert and air travel advice website. Hobica talked with airline industry reporter Hugo Martin about trends in airline fees. The latest comes from Spirit Airlines, whose website lists 72 fees in eight different categories, including baggage fees, seat fees and on-board food and drink fees. Spirit, the first U.S.-based carrier to impose a fee for carry-on bags, this week announced that it will soon begin charging $100 if passengers show up to the gate with a carry-on bag instead of paying ahead of time.

Recent surveys reinforce what you already know and likely fume about: Fliers hate baggage fees more than any other fee tacked on to airfares. Travel booking website Fly.com confirmed that prevailing sentiment when it asked hundreds of its users about airline fees. But it also learned what perks fliers would be willing to pay for. That's where things get interesting. Far be it from me to encourage airlines to come up with more ways to squeeze consumers, but maybe passengers wouldn't feel so ripped off if they were paying for things they actually wanted.

If you think air carriers have run out of ideas for new fees to charge passengers, think again. Among the fees airlines have announced in the past few weeks are a charge to zip through airport screening gates and board early, a fee to watch streaming movies and a fee to have your bags delivered in  36 cities around the country. It should be no surprise that airlines keep coming up with new fees: Combined, such charges generated an estimated $36 billion in 2012 for the world's largest airlines.

Complain all you want about the airlines but at least the fares are not on the rise. When adjusted for inflation, domestic airfares dropped 3.6% in the April-through-June period, compared with the same period last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The average domestic fare--including round trips and one-way fares---during that period was $378, compared with the adjusted-for-inflation total of $392 for the same time in 2012, the bureau reported Wednesday.

Anyone who has flown on a commercial airline recently might assume that air carriers have run out of ideas for new passenger fees. After all, the world's biggest airlines are expected this year to collect $36.1 billion in revenue for food, drinks, wireless Internet service, roomier seats and checked bags. But the airline industry is not resting on its money-making laurels. At a three-day “Airline Information” conference in San Diego last week, airline representatives met with technology firms, marketing companies and others to discuss ways to maximize airline passenger fees.

Labor Day is nigh and we're heading into the last big surge of vacation travel of the summer. Could there be a better moment for American Airlines to unveil its latest nuisance fee? American's bright new idea is to charge coach passengers extra for a seat in the first few rows of the cabin, the idea being that these are desirable because their occupants can be assured of getting overhead bin space and get off the plane faster after landing. I can certainly understand the desire to get off an American Airlines plane as quickly as possible.

For a limited time, American Airlines will take 25% off the cost of choosing to fly in a preferred seat (just the seat fee, not off the cost of the ticket). The sale price of preferred seats -- usually aisle and window seats at the front of the plane -- start at $3 per flight for a limited time. The deal: The savings sound small on this deal, but they can add up. American doesn't divulge the top price for preferred seats on its website; it just says the cost varies by itinerary.

If there is any upside to airline fees (besides millions in industry profits ), Southwest Airlines may have found it with its Help Us Help Them EarlyBird Check-In campaign. The program promised  that for every $10 fee paid by passengers for preferred boarding and early seating between Sept. 21 and Oct. 4, Southwest would donate $1 to help wildlife and habitats in the Gulf Coast recover from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill . The potential amount raised would be capped at $100,000.

Question: I recently received a second notification of a change in my flight for a trip next year. I wanted to change my ticket as a result; I was told there was a $200 change fee plus any fare increase. No waiver, even though the airline was the one that started it. As I pointed out to the agent, I didn't charge the airline a change fee. The agent laughed. In the end, I didn't change my ticket. What's your opinion about the airlines making changes and passengers getting nothing from them as a result?

Passenger fees and other extra charges generated $27.1 billion for airlines around the world in 2012, with major carriers like United, Delta and American airlines leading the revenue race. In 2012, 53 airlines around the globe collected $27.1 billion in so-called ancillary revenue, compared with $22.6 billion collected by 50 carriers in 2011, according to a new report by IdeaWorks Co., a Wisconsin consultant on airline fees. The study was sponsored by CarTrawler, a Dublin, Ireland-based provider of car rental distribution systems.

Most of us will put up with a cramped middle seat on a short flight. But on trips more than three hours long, we are ready to crack open our wallets and pay for a window or aisle seat. That is one of the findings of a recent Harris Interactive poll of 2,276 adults on the subject of airline pet peeves and passenger fees. On flights shorter than two hours, 33% of those surveyed said they would pay for extra legroom. If the flight lasts more than three hours, 58% said they would be willing to pay. Thirteen percent said they'd pay more than $25. But even if fliers are willing to pay the fees, they won't necessarily be happy about it. Creed Mamikunian, a doctor from Anchorage, describes all airline fees as ridiculous and offensive.

Baggage fees are still a source of anger, but passengers are more accepting of them, according to a survey on airline satisfaction. In fact, overall satisfaction with air travel has increased to the highest level since 2006, according to the J.D. Power & Associates airline satisfaction study for 2013. Airline satisfaction improved to 695 points on a 1,000-point scale, up 14 points from 2012, according to the study, which measured satisfaction on such factors as cost, in-flight services, boarding and flight crew.

Airline mergers, a deep recession and surging fuel prices have lead to sharp cuts in airline service around the country. Hardest hit: medium-sized airports. Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, L.A./Ontario International Airport and other mid-sized airports lost an average of 26.2% of their flights from 2007 to 2012, according to a new study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology's International Center for Air Transportation. The cuts are a result of airlines eliminating less-profitable routes and focusing on more popular, high-profit routes, the report said.

Airline travel fees - including charges to check a bag and to board early - have become so prevalent that travelers practically need an advanced degree in mathematics to calculate overall trip costs. Last year at least 36 airline fees increased and 16 others were redefined, bundled or unbundled with other services, according to a study by the consumer travel website TravelNerd. One bright spot in the TravelNerd study was that the average airline fee increases were only $5 to $10 each.

Is your love life lacking? Maybe you need a vacation. A survey of 2,076 adults found that 88% of Americans are “somewhat likely to be intimate” when taking a vacation with a spouse or partner. Only 12% said they are “somewhat or much less likely” to be intimate on vacation, according to the survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Expedia, one of the world's largest travel site. What's more, the study said couples who vacation three or more times per year are more likely to be satisfied with their love life than those who take two or fewer vacations per year.
