Magic Johnson of the Lakers, rated one of the top players in the NBA, shakes his head when he talks about going up against the Twin Towers of Houston, Ralph Sampson, 7-4, and Akeem Olajuwon, who is seven feet. "Those big guys," Magic said, "you beat one and here comes the other one. And on the offensive rebounds, oh man! You think you've got it and they reach over you and still dunk it."

Dennis Rodman, who has flustered many of the NBA's best shooters, shed tears of joy after being named the league's defensive player of the year. Rodman, whose defense helped the Detroit Pistons allow the fewest points in the NBA this season, edged Houston's Akeem Olajuwon for the honor in voting by writers and broadcasters. "It's a dream come true for me," Rodman said Monday. "I was disappointed when I didn't win it last year. I take pride in defense. I think I do a good job of it."

With the International Olympic Committee making professional basketball players eligible to play in the Olympics, we may be faced a court decision that has a familiar ring. Just as in the America's Cup, there may be a ruling that our players were "built" (see Akeem Olajuwon) and "sailed" (see Michael Jordan) with an unfair advantage that did not live up to the "spirit of the competition" and thus it was also a "gross mismatch." Don Chaney, fired by the Clippers a year ago, signed a three-year contract Monday to coach the National Basketball Assn.'s Houston Rockets, and stressed he would have no trouble communicating with star center Akeem Olajuwon. "To be honest, I'm tired of hearing all the negative talk about Akeem," Chaney said. "You'll have to ease up on him a little." Olajuwon criticized former coach Bill Fitch, who was fired June 6, and publicly criticized his teammates last season.
