No. 3 Alabama is positively old-fashioned. Other teams may have their shiny new spread offenses and pass-first mentality. The Crimson Tide just keeps getting it done with special teams and defense. Alabama picked off four Jevan Snead passes and scored twice after special-teams miscues to smother No. 20 Mississippi, 22-3, on Saturday. "This was the most complete win we've had all year, in a difficult situation," Alabama Coach Nick Saban said. "It's like climbing a mountain.

The Times' Chris Dufresne unveils his preseason college football top 25, one day (and team) at a time: No. 11 Auburn Here's how good the Southeastern Conference is compared to all those other Triple-AAA impostors that call themselves college football leagues: The SEC boasts five coaches who have won major college national titles: Current Florida Coach Urban Meyer and former Gators coach Steve Spurrier, now at South Carolina, have hoisted...

College football's injury policy is a joke, the byproduct of no central leadership and paranoid, highly paid coaches who still think it's 1980. Last week's debacle with USC and an L.A. Daily News reporter over the legitimate reporting of an injury to the Trojans' kicker underscored how Draconian coaches have become in trying to protect their programs. The irony with USC is that the issue, which was resolved, served as the kind of distraction during a "big-game" week that coaches so desperately try to avoid.

. -- Julio Jones left defenders grasping at his heels and Alabama's defense was typically immovable. The Crimson Tide is riding that combination to the SEC championship game for the second consecutive season. The popular Jones made the biggest play of what has been a relatively quiet sophomore season, breaking free for a 73-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, and No. 3 Alabama locked down No. 9 Louisiana State in a 24-15 victory Saturday. Leigh Tiffin booted a 40-yard field goal with 3:04 left to seal it and the Crimson Tide (9-0, 6-0 Southeastern Conference)

Alabama and Georgia are playing Saturday for the first time since ... 2008. Such is the nature of scheduling in the Southeastern Conference and the quirks of the Bowl Championship Series. Alabama, for example, won the BCS title last season when Georgia won the SEC East. The teams avoided each other in the SEC title game, however, because Alabama made the BCS title game without winning the SEC West. LSU won the division and then defeated Georgia. The Tigers were "rewarded" with a rematch against Alabama that the Tigers lost at the Superdome.

Alabama is No. 1 across the board when it comes to college football rankings, and rightfully so. The Crimson Tide certainly appears to be the best team in the nation with a dream matchup against the speedy Oregon Ducks in the BCS national title game a strong possibility. That makes Alabama's game on Saturday against dynamic quarterback Johnny Manziel -- a.k.a. Johnny Football -- and No. 15 Texas A&M very intriguing. Coming off a hard-fought, come-from-behind 21-17 victory over Southeastern Conference rival Louisiana State last week, many think the Tide could be primed for an upset.
