A retrial began Tuesday for a former Long Beach police officer who shot and injured a Santa Ana carpenter during a traffic dispute in September, 1991. Jurors in the first trial of Alan B. Ice failed to reach a verdict on felony charges of assault and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Motorist Neil Cramer was shot in the shoulder after exchanging angry words and obscene hand gestures with Ice at a Fountain Valley stoplight.

A Superior Court judge ordered a retrial Friday for a former Long Beach police officer charged with shooting and wounding a motorist during a traffic dispute. Alan B. Ice, 46, of Fountain Valley is expected to go on trial again next month for the Sept. 28, 1991, shooting of Neil Cramer, 37, a Santa Ana carpenter who has recovered from his injuries. A mistrial was declared Thursday after jurors deadlocked 8 to 4 in favor of convicting a former Long Beach police officer charged with shooting and wounding a driver during a traffic dispute. Alan B. Ice, 46, of Fountain Valley showed little emotion as the Santa Ana Superior Court jury foreman told Judge Everett W. A former Long Beach police officer charged with wounding an unarmed motorist during a traffic dispute testified Thursday that his gun went off accidentally in the midst of the altercation. Alan B. Ice, 47, of Fountain Valley took the witness stand in his own defense and told a Santa Ana Superior Court jury his gun fired as his Jeep lurched forward. Ice said he does not recall pulling the trigger.

A 37-year-old carpenter testified Wednesday that he feared for his life when he was shot and wounded by an off-duty Long Beach police officer after a Fountain Valley traffic dispute turned violent. A former Long Beach police officer pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Superior Court to charges that he shot a motorist in Fountain Valley during a traffic dispute. Alan B. Ice, 45, of Fountain Valley was arraigned on felony charges of assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle, which could result in a 10-year prison term if he is convicted. Trial for Ice, who is free on his own recognizance, was set for Jan. 31.
