Federal Prohibition agent Eliot Ness' legendary campaign against Chicago mob boss Al Capone inspired the 1960s TV series "The Untouchables," a blockbuster Hollywood movie, countless books and perhaps even the comic-strip hero Dick Tracy. But a recent move in the Senate to name the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' glassy new Washington headquarters after the 1930s lawman has sparked an acrimonious debate over whether the storied crime fighter really deserves the honor.

Tourists were evacuated from Alcatraz Island on Friday for the second time in a week after authorities got a phone tip about a "potentially dangerous" situation at the former prison, now one of the city's most popular tourist sites. Roger Scott, a spokesman for the National Park Service, which manages Alcatraz, said authorities also closed historic Ft. Point at the south end of Golden Gate Bridge.

Despite its infamous past, Alcatraz has always been good for an easy guffaw. In the busy Cell Block 41 tchotchke shop at the foot of Pier 41 are boxer shorts, shot glasses, aprons and black and white striped T-shirts, all stamped in screaming boldface: "I've Escaped Alcatraz." But for the cluster of people lined up this evening for the 1 1/2-mile boat ride to Alcatraz Island, the photo exhibit opening they are about to witness will most certainly take the punch out of any stale one-liners.

A substantial majority of San Francisco voters will reject the use of Alcatraz Island for a casino site, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Proposition N, an advisory measure on the June 7 ballot, was opposed by a margin of 57% to 35%, a poll by the paper found. "I hate to sound so Californian, but it's just not good karma," said Kathleen Kelly, 30. Proponents say a casino on the site of the former federal prison could generate millions of dollars for the debt-plagued city.

State parks and towns adjacent to Yosemite National Park have a message for Californians: We're open for business. The government shutdown of national parks, forests, memorials and monuments that began Tuesday inadvertently has driven folks away from outdoor areas unaffected by the federal action. "Most people don't know the difference between a national park and a state park," John Koeberer, chief executive of California Parks Co., which operates concessions in national and state parks, said in a statement Wednesday.

"If you don't have anything to do," says the graffiti scratched into the cellblock wall, "don't come here to do it." That would have been excellent advice from 1883 to 1989, when this penitentiary on San Lucas Island was synonymous with cruelty and isolation. Inmates labored in the tropical sun, breaking rocks and harvesting salt from the sea, dragging their leg irons and dreaming of escape. I've wanted to come here for years.

A proposal aimed at putting a gambling casino on Alcatraz Island failed to qualify for the June city ballot. Supporters of Proposition N were unable to find a fourth member of the Board of Supervisors to sign the measure before Wednesday's 5 p.m. deadline. Only three supervisors backed the advisory measure calling on City Hall officials to explore the idea of converting the former federal prison site in San Francisco Bay to a gambling casino.

Alcatraz Island, Calif. — EACH day at sundown, when the last tour boat departs this desolate, wind-swept outpost, one lonesome soul is left behind. He's the night watchman of Alcatraz. Guided by the beam of his flashlight, Gregory Johnson inches down the gloomy infirmary ward of this retired prison, once home to the nation's most malicious killers and psychotic criminal malcontents. "Hey, what's that noise?" he asks, throwing the light against the half-open door of a solitary confinement cell.
