Alex English, the eighth-leading scorer in NBA history, will sign a free-agent contract with the Dallas Mavericks to fill the hole left by Sam Perkins' departure to the Lakers, the team said Tuesday. "We're excited to get him," Maverick Coach Richie Adubato said. "He'll take up some of the scoring punch with Perkins gone." Sources said English would get a one-year contract with an option for a second year and that it would be worth more than $1 million per season.

The nice thing about Alex English is, there's no pressure on him. How could there be? Nobody knows him. He's classified. Like a bombsight or a new nuclear tank. Spies are better known. Stop 10 people on the street outside of Denver and ask them who or what an Alexander English is or what he does for a living and you can bet all 10 of them will have no idea. Just for ducks, who do you think Alex English is--one of the following? (1) That British actor, star of "Bridge on the River Kwai"?

Stunned by the defection of power forward Sam Perkins, the Dallas Mavericks said Tuesday they are looking at the possible acquisition of Denver Nuggets forward Alex English. "We are taking a hard look at him. There's been communication between Rick Sund and his agent," Mavericks head coach Richie Adubato said. "I don't know if we're too late on this or not. Alex has been out there (on the trading block), and several teams have been looking at him.

Denver Nuggets forward Alex English wants to play a season in Italy when his days in the National Basketball Association are over. Most players compare playing in Europe to being in exile, but English sees it as a dream. "I've worked in Italy every summer, and I love it there," said English, who teaches at a basketball camp outside Milan. "Once I retire, I would love to just go over there and play a year. Believe it or not, the people in Italy appreciate basketball a lot more than they do here.

In Thomas Bonk's NBA column of April 1, he picked his all-star teams and best sixth man. His opinion that Bill Walton is the best sixth man is one thing, but his follow-up statement that "there's no one else" is absurd. An excellent case can be made for Michael Cooper who averages nearly 10 minutes more per game than Walton, is among the league's top three-point shooters, plays three different positions, and is on the NBA's all-defensive team year after year. In addition, Bonk's inclusion of Kevin McHale on the second team ahead of both Alex English and Charles Barkley suggests that he would be more suited to writing columns for the Boston Globe than the Los Angeles Times.
