Alex Kreps is having a strong season for Golden West College's basketball team. In fact, he is doing well enough to draw the attention of several four-year colleges, including Colorado State. But Kreps is the first to admit that he's nervous about all of the attention that comes with being recruited--mainly because it's new to him. Unlike some community college players who at least received letters from colleges while in high school, Kreps missed all that.

December 8, 1989 | STEVE KRESAL and In the Pasadena women's basketball tournament: and Orange Coast 86, Oxnard 38--Erika Manning scored 18 points and had 17 rebounds and Stefanie Moorman added 16 points to lead the Pirates (10-2), who will play for the championship tonight at 8 against the winner of the Pasadena-Santa Barbara game.
Kevin Andersen and Jason Vaughan took over in the second half, more out of necessity than anything else, and led Golden West College to a 102-75 victory over Citrus Thursday in the first round of the Golden West men's basketball tournament. Golden West's center Alex Kreps hurt his ankle midway through the first half and didn't return. He is questionable for tonight's semifinal game with Antelope Valley (8-2) at 8. Golden West (7-3) then lost forward J.J.

With a small but concerned group of outsiders among 200 spectators in the Golden West College gym Wednesday, Cypress defeated the Rustlers, 80-57, in an Orange Empire Conference men's basketball game. The group--the Rancho Santiago team and coaching staff--was looking for some help from Golden West in the conference race. Cypress had defeated Rancho Santiago, 75-60, last Wednesday to take a one-game lead over the Dons.

Loyola Marymount found the winning combination Saturday, getting 48 points from Terrell Lowery and pushing the pace to beat Idaho State, 114-110, in the consolation game of the Freedom Bowl Classic at UC Irvine. Lowery's point total set a tournament and Bren Center record, but the Lions got big plays from several players down the stretch to improve to 2-3 after Idaho State (1-3) erased a 13-point second-half deficit and took a two-point lead with 4:27 to play.

Gene Altamirano had 22 points to lead Rancho Santiago College to a 72-61 victory over Mt. San Antonio Thursday in a championship semifinal-round game of the Rancho Santiago Holiday basketball tournament. Altamirano, a sophomore forward, made six of six three-pointers and four of four free throws. He scored eight consecutive points to help Rancho Santiago overcome Mt. San Antonio in the second half. The Mounties led at the half, 29-28.
