Barry Bonds doesn't know why New York Yankee Manager Buck Showalter would single him out for anything. The San Francisco Giants outfielder showed up for the All-Star workout and wondered why Showalter criticized him and Ken Griffey Jr. for not having their shirts tucked in at all times. "That's stupidity--a manager throwing stones at a baseball player," Bonds said. "Enough people are throwing stones at them. I think it's childish, to be honest."

The All-Star game drew TV ratings 9% higher than last year, reversing a trend that has seen All-Star game viewership suffer big declines in the NFL, NBA and NHL. Fox Sports' telecast of the American League's 4-1 victory over the National League at Seattle on Tuesday night produced an 11 rating and 19 share. Last year's All-Star game, which a host of marquee players sat out because of injuries, wound up with a 10.1 rating--the worst since the showcase contest first was shown in 1967.

New York Jet wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson said he and several other NFL players who grew up in the inner-city wanted to "give something back." That is why Johnson, Lamont Warren, Sam Rogers, Mark Fields and Shaun Williams are helping to underwrite tonight's "Gridiron War," a high school football all-star game involving graduating seniors from Los Angeles City Section schools against counterparts from Southern Section schools in Los Angeles County. Kickoff is at 7 at Santa Monica College.

The All-Star game has always been a blast. Reggie Jackson's rocket off the light tower. Bo Jackson's bomb to dead center field. Ted Williams' moonshot. From the first home run--Babe Ruth's drive in 1933 at Comiskey Park--up through the most recent one--Sandy Alomar's winning drive last season at Jacobs Field--home runs have always highlighted the summer exhibition. And, no surprise, all of baseball is talking about only one topic as Tuesday night's game at Coors Field approaches.

Into occasional NBA All-Star games, real drama intrudes. But never as it will today when Magic Johnson, whose celebrity extends beyond basketball and national boundaries, returns to the game he loves. Despite the controversy that preceded it, the participants to a man insist it's Magic's day and their honor to share it. "This very well could be his last game," Michael Jordan said Saturday, "and that's a meaning in itself because he's done so much for the game."
