A $450,000 settlement described as the largest ever reached in a housing discrimination lawsuit in the United States was announced Monday in a case involving a black airline employee who was rejected as a tenant at a Westchester apartment complex. The suit on behalf of Allan Lopez, now a 28-year-old customer service agent for USAir, and others was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court two years ago against Westchester Investment Co.

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund won a big one last week. Lawyers negotiated a $450,000 settlement, the largest ever in an individual housing discrimination suit. The case stemmed from a complaint at an apartment complex in Westchester. One hopes the steep penalty will serve as a warning of just how harsh the consequences of unfair discrimination can be. In the past, landlords and apartment managers could routinely ignore fair housing laws.

The western regional office of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People's Legal Defense and Education Fund has filed a lawsuit charging the owners and managers of Belford Park Apartments in Westchester with discrimination against black applicants. The suit was filed Tuesday in U. S. District Court on behalf of the Westside Fair Housing Council and three other plaintiffs.
