It figured that Allyson Felix's apartment in Playa Vista would reflect her personality. Soft blues and earthy browns. A spare sense in the furnishings. Everything perfectly in its place except Chloe, her 4-year-old Yorkshire terrier, who drew a mild rebuke from Felix for investigating a visitor. A kitchen she keeps so neat and clean it was hard to believe that it's ever used. "I cook here,"Felix insisted, between bites of the salad and turkey sandwich her brother, Wes, had brought for her lunch.

Allyson Felix's running style is so elegant, it's easy for her to lapse into floating like a butterfly when she should sting like a bee. "It's a gift and a curse because it looks very fluid," she said. "It's nice, but sometimes you have to get into an aggressive mode. " It took the Los Angeles native until her third Olympics to develop that edge, an odyssey that included silver medals in the 200 meters at Athens and Beijing and a fifth-place finish in the 100 meters last week. When it all clicked in her mind Wednesday, she hunted down her dream instead of gliding toward it and finally realized her golden vision.

EUGENE, Ore. - USA Track and Field recently resolved its lengthy administrative turmoil by hiring Max Siegel, a former NASCAR and music industry executive, as its chief executive. Now the organization's focus can shift to supporting athletes and raising the sport's Olympic medal count from 23 at the 2008 Beijing Games to its stated goal of 30 in London. Making the U.S. team will be half the battle. The trials, which began Thursday, figure to be toughest in the sprints and hurdles, traditionally Team USA's strongest events.

One of them accomplished something that had never been done before. The other did something that had been done only once. So it came as no surprise when Xavier Carter of Palmetto (Fla.) Palm Bay and Allyson Felix of North Hills L.A. Baptist were selected as the boys' and girls' athletes of the meet at the 36th running of the Arcadia Invitational track and field meet Saturday night.

OSAKA, Japan -- This was to be the season when Sanya Richards laid the groundwork to convince Olympic officials there should be a change in the 2008 Beijing Summer Games schedule so she could go after gold medals in the 200 and 400 meters. That double would be almost impossible under the current schedule. Now, you can make a better case to change it for the benefit of USC's Allyson Felix.

Even when Roger Federer had the lead, Novak Djokovic had the answers. The top-ranked Serb recovered from early breaks in both sets and beat Federer, 7-6 (6), 7-5, in the championship match of the ATP finals at London. Federer broke Djokovic's serve to take a 2-0 lead in the first set, and then again to open the second, but both times the world's No. 1 player rebounded to get back into the match. "Maybe a bit of regret because I had the lead twice first before him," Federer said.

Allyson Felix's learning curve will include learning how to run the curve on the 200. But the 18-year-old sprinter has come so far so fast, it seems no lesson is beyond her grasp. Barely a year after her graduation from Los Angeles Baptist High, the youngest member of the U.S. track team earned a silver medal Wednesday in her first Olympic final.
