A county commission reversed a recommendation Tuesday that buildings on the site of the proposed 272-unit La Vina housing project in Altadena be given a state historical designation. Last April, the Los Angeles County Historical Landmarks and Records Commission recommended that 10 abandoned buildings making up the 1937 La Vina tuberculosis sanatorium receive the historical designation.

Bureaucratic Grinches are threatening to darken Christmas Tree Lane, the mile-long avenue of deodar cedar trees in Altadena that have been festooned with holiday lights for almost 80 years, volunteers say.

High on an isolated summit above Altadena sits a crudely hewn headstone that may soon become a state point of historical interest. The stone marks the resting place of Owen Brown, son of abolitionist John Brown. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, responding to an appeal from John Brown's great-great granddaughters, on Tuesday asked the state Office of Historic Preservation to declare the site an official point of interest.

The historic Hawkins House will get a permanent berth after a two-year wait and the community will get a Town Hall. The Regional Planning Commission, which oversees building in county unincorporated areas, voted unanimously last week to grant required permits to the nonprofit Altadena Town Hall Corp. despite the lack of adequate parking. Commissioners allowed on-street parking and private parking nearby to be counted.
