Scott Kazmir is new to this whole Angels-Boston Red Sox playoff rivalry, which, until this October, had been as one-sided as Larry Holmes versus Randall "Tex" Cobb. But as the good folks in Kazmir's hometown of Houston like to say, this ain't his first rodeo. The 25-year-old left-hander has made only six starts for the Angels since his Aug. 28 trade from Tampa Bay, but he is well-versed in the potential pitfalls of playoff baseball in Boston. The Angels have a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five American League division series and can put the Red Sox -- and their own playoff demons of 1986, 2004, 2007 and 2008 -- away with a victory in Game 3 on Sunday in Fenway Park.

How good is Justin Verlander? Not only did he shut down the Oakland Athletics in Detroit's clinching 3-0 victory in the American League division series on Thursday, he wanted to pitch the ninth inning despite being exhausted. Verlander gave up two hits, one walk and struck out 10 over eight innings, and many wondered why Manager Jim Leyland removed him and brought in Joaquin Benoit to pitch the ninth. Verlander explained all after the game in an interview with TBS' David Aldridge.

Reporting from Arlington, Texas Evan Longoria admitted his left quadriceps still bothered him. "I felt like Kirk Gibson a little bit," said Longoria, referring to the hobbled Gibson's dramatic pinch-hit home run in 1988 that sparked the Dodgers to a World Series victory. But after Longoria hit two doubles and a two-run homer Sunday, the Tampa Bay Rays are on the verge of a stirring comeback. Their 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers forced a fifth and deciding game Tuesday in the American League division series.

Consider planning major league baseball's version of a wedding for 45,000 guests. Throw in a dose of uncertainty, the usual first-time jitters and figure the whole event will be documented by about 600 journalists and viewed by millions across the nation. Don't forget decorations, fireworks, entertainment and food.

The Angels have had few explanations as to why the Boston Red Sox, the team they swept in the 2009 American League division series, keep pummeling them. "Some games we haven't played to our potential," Manager Mike Scioscia said before the game. "Some of the games they've just come out here and beat us. They've taken it to us last year and this year. " And again Saturday, when the Red Sox won, 5-0, in front of 40,025 at Angel Stadium. "No matter whether we're 0-19 against Boston, as long as we win the division, that's all I care about," outfielder Torii Hunter said.

New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has left a trail of broken bats over the last 15 years that, if you were to stack them together, could fill a cord or two. "He could probably build himself a 10,000-square-foot log cabin down in Panama with all of them," Angels outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. said. "That's how many bats he's broken. "You just want them to die a hero. The bat might shatter into 30 pieces, but if the ball drops on the outfield grass, you don't have any problem with it."

So the Angels lost the first game of the World Series. Big deal. So the Angels lost, 4-3, to the Giants and left men at third base three times, twice with fewer than two outs, which would seem to be terribly disheartening, awfully discouraging, horribly draining But it's not. This is how they do it, these Angels. This is how they play their game. They give you something, sure. They gave the Yankees a win in Game 1 of the American League division series. Remember that?

The Angels and Boston Red Sox appear evenly matched offensively, with both teams featuring speed at the top of the lineup and patience and power from both sides of the plate throughout. Their rotations are among the best and deepest in the game, each boasting four high-quality arms -- John Lackey, Jered Weaver, Scott Kazmir and Joe Saunders for the Angels, and Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz and Daisuke Matsuzaka for Boston. Both teams play sound defense, though the more athletic Angels have a slight edge in game-changing playmakers.
