America has spent the past 15 weeks on the precipice of war in the Persian Gulf, but for most people in this heartland city, the bugles have sounded with no more intensity than Muzak. Scratch the surface of opinions and beneath the yeses and noes are often layers of froth--confusion about who's who in the distant Middle East and uncertainty as to why Uncle Sam has put 240,000 GIs in the desert sand, with more to come.
