Actress Amy Adams stopped by “The Late Show” Tuesday to plug her latest project, “The Master,” which tells the story of a spiritual leader whose life bears a certain similarity to that of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. Anyone who regularly tunes in to “The Late Show” knows that David Letterman can be a relentless interrogator, even - or perhaps especially - when his line of questioning makes guests visibly uncomfortable. Last night, it was Adams who had the thankless task of trying to politely deflect his questions about the controversial religion.  “The movie is loosely based on Scientology, am I right about that?

But, while all have been nominated for Academy Awards, none have won the little gold statue we call Oscar.  [ Update: On Sunday night, Brad Pitt won an Oscar for co-producing "12 Years a Slave.

From bateau-style T-shirts, to Marc Jacobs' spring 2012 graphic Mod black-and-white runway extravaganza and beyond, stripes are the fashion trend that just won't end. They've been hot on the streets and at retail for going on four years now. But whereas most celebs would have shied away from wearing potentially unflattering lines on the red carpet, that's not the case now. When you grow up knowing all the words to the love theme from "Superman," as Amy Adams did, the thought of one day portraying Lois Lane doesn't really pop into your head. "Never," says Adams, who will indeed be playing Supe's main squeeze in next summer's Superman origin story "Man of Steel. " "I did, however, grow up wanting to be Lois Lane. For real. Really wanting to be Lois Lane, not just an actress playing her. " And why not? After all, as played by Margot Kidder in Richard Donner's 1978 film version of "Superman,"  Lane is a dynamic woman -- smart, independent and able to hold her own with anyone, even the Man of Steel.

What I'm loving about the Oscars so far is the individual style statements -- Pharrell Williams in shorts and Lupita Nyong'o in what she calling Nairobi blue. "This is Prada and it was made for me. It's a blue that reminds me of Nairobi and I wanted to have a little bit of home," Nyong'o told Ryan Seacrest. Are we really shocked that a fashion house would send out a release announcing that a movie star is carrying its handbag to the funeral of another movie star? On Friday, celebrities gathered in New York to pay tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman, the great actor whose death from an apparent heroin overdose has occasioned a poignant outpouring not just about his contributions to American cinema and theater but also about the disease of addiction and the thrall in which it keeps even those who have been deeply committed to sobriety for years.
