The way Mighty Duck Coach Ron Wilson figured it, Roman Oksiuta was stealing money. Given Oksiuta's meager production of five goals and 11 points in 25 games and his $600,000 salary, that was close to grand larceny. "He went a month where he didn't want to work," Wilson said. "He went a month where he didn't sweat a drop." Wilson wasn't about to play Oksiuta under those conditions. No work meant no play. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued a nine-page opinion Thursday in support of his decision to uphold Mighty Duck defenseman J.J. Daigneault's 10-game suspension for "abuse of official." Bettman called the decision "difficult" but sided strongly with referee Don Koharski, saying he would not overrule an official unless there was "clear and convincing evidence he was wrong and the call could not reasonably have been made."

When the lights glare, the cameras crowd in and the microphones are offered like so many bouquets, Anatoli Semenov protests that his English is not very good. When the group is smaller, and the risk of being misunderstood is less, the Moscow-born center for the Mighty Ducks expresses himself well. "Darwinism," he told a Vancouver reporter who asked how he had made the adjustment to four NHL teams in four seasons after playing 11 seasons for the same Russian team, Moscow Dynamo. Say what?
