ELISABETH SHUE took a deep breath. It was still early in the media push for her new film "Gracie," an indie drama based on her own soccer-obsessed youth, and she was clearly still grappling with what she called the "sacredness" of her past, the "nerve-racking" aspect of making it public. The film, which opens Friday, tells the story of a feisty 15-year-old girl (played by Carly Schroeder) growing up in a middle-class home in late-1970s New Jersey.

Those who played with Andrew Shue previously said he was scrappy, that he wasn't afraid to mix it up. Shue himself said he was an emotional player. And Shue, the "Melrose Place" star playing the first of two games for the Splash, was in the middle of a scrap Tuesday night in a 6-3 victory over the Washington Warthogs in front of 4,368 at The Pond of Anaheim. Washington's Troy Snyder kicked Shue in the chest after the two had tumbled to the turf.

The monthlong World Cup soccer tournament comes to a climax Sunday when Brazil and Italy play for the championship at the Rose Bowl, beginning at 12:30 p.m. on ABC (Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42). Tonight at 6 on cable's TNT, Grammy winner Toni Braxton, Andrew Shue ("Melrose Place"), CBS' Pat O'Brien, Sinbad and All-4-One will appear on "Hollywood Backstage at the World Cup," broadcast live from the back lot of Paramount Studios in Hollywood.

Now that the "90210" remake has been renewed for a second season, the CW is moving ahead with plans for a remake of "Melrose Place," which was originally a spinoff of "Beverly Hills, 90210." This week, the CW greenlighted the pilot, which was co-written by "Smallville" producers Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin, and hired Academy Award winner Davis Guggenheim ("An Inconvenient Truth") to direct it. On Wednesday, the network cast the first actor, Michael Rady, who recently appeared on CBS' "Swingtown."

Andrew Shue, the actor who plays Billy on the television series, "Melrose Place," signed a contract Wednesday to play two games for the Splash, Anaheim's entry in the Continental Indoor Soccer League. Shue, a midfielder, was one of two local amateurs protected by the Splash, which opens the season Friday at The Pond at Anaheim against the Las Vegas Dustdevils. Shue competed for Ivy League-champion Dartmouth. * The Rams announced the signing of sixth-round draft pick Rickey Brady of Oklahoma.
