The longer you play this game, the more you know not to overanalyze a torrid streak like the one the Angels, who won 15 of 18 games entering a critical four-game series against Oakland, were on. "You just keep riding that bike until the wheels fall off," veteran right fielder Torii Hunter said. The Angels didn't go flying over the handlebars and crashing to the pavement in a 3-1 loss to the Athletics on Monday night at Angel Stadium. Dan Haren delivered another quality start, giving up three runs and four hits in 61/3 innings, 40-year-old reliever Jason Isringhausen escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh, and the Angels played a clean game defensively.

Angels center fielder Mike Trout started this series neck-and-neck in the American League Most Valuable Player race with Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera. Trout on Saturday created some separation, creating signature moments to bookend the Angels' 6-1 victory over reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander. In the bottom of the first inning, Trout hammered a leadoff homer - his 26th of the season - to ignite a four-run first inning off Verlander. Then, for the game's final out, Trout leaped and extended his glove over an outfield wall to rob a home run for the fourth time this season, turning a towering blast to dead center by Tigers slugger Prince Fielder into a home team victory.

After two years of tinkering with tradition, Major League Baseball next year will revert to opening its season on Monday and closing it on Sunday. However, in the first season in which interleague play is scheduled each day, the Angels are set to open with an interleague game — at Cincinnati on Monday, April 1. The Angels and Dodgers — and other geographic rivals — are set for four games rather than six next season, none of them on a...

Break out the champagne — the drought is over. Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson tasted victory for the first time in more than two months Wednesday night, giving up three runs and eight hits in six innings of a 10-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Angel Stadium. Torii Hunter had three hits, including two doubles, and Kendrys Morales and Chris Iannetta each hit two-run homers to lead a 14-hit attack, as the Angels improved to 5-0 against the Red Sox this season and gained a game in both the American League West and wild-card standings.

The Angels dusted off the turntable Sunday and gave their broken record another spin, Zack Greinke serving as disc jockey for the latest in a string of shoddy starts by baseball's most underachieving rotation. Greinke, considered the piece that would elevate the Angels to World Series contenders when he was acquired from Milwaukee on July 27, was roughed up for six runs and seven hits in six innings of an 8-3 loss to Tampa Bay, the Rays completing a four-game sweep in Angel Stadium.

The Angels continued to redefine rock bottom in a season filled with new lows, their 8-3 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday completing the Rays' four-game sweep in Angel Stadium and dropping the Angels a season-high nine games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West. Zack Greinke, thought to be the crucial piece  to push the Angels into World Series contention when he was acquired from Milwaukee for three double-A prospects on July 27, was roughed up for six runs and seven hits in six innings, as the Angels lost for the 13th time in 18 games.

The Tampa Bay Rays will grimace at their offensive numbers Wednesday, when Seattle's Felix Hernandez threw a perfect game and a 1-0 loss their way. But those Rays can smile when they take a peek at the offensive numbers the Angels have put up when the two clubs have gone toe to toe this season. And the Rays can start smiling Thursday, because that's when the Angels and Rays will kick off a pivotal four-game series at Angel Stadium. "Tampa has pitched very well this year," Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said before his team faced Cleveland.

Monday was the 39th anniversary of my mother's death, a shock I know, because I had one. She never met my kids, and every time I've tried to tell them about her I get the same look as when I ask them to watch a black-and-white movie. (By the way, we have a baseball beat writer at The Times who never heard of Clint Eastwood or Paul Newman . Can you imagine going through life without ever watching "Cool Hand Luke"?) My wife probably remembers my mother the most — for not liking her. The truth is, my mother didn't like any of the girls I dated, and almost all of those girls came to dislike me as well.

After a tough one-run loss in Yankee Stadium on July 13,C.J. Wilson said one of the keys to second-half baseball is that "you have to have a big windshield and keep looking ahead - you can't have a rear-view mirror. " After Saturday night's 3-0 loss to Tampa Bay in Angel Stadium, the first-place Texas Rangers remain several car lengths ahead of the Angels, who are four games back in the American League West. But that object in the rear-view mirror is now in the windshield. The red-hot Oakland Athletics won for the 18th time in 21 games Saturday and moved into sole possession of second place in the division, 3 1/2 games behind the Rangers.
