Plans to build an arena next to Busch Stadium in St. Louis and purchase the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League were abandoned because preservationists fought the razing of a turn-of-the-century warehouse complex at the proposed site. Civic Center Corp., a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Cos., Inc., reluctantly ceased efforts to construct the arena, a spokesman said. Civic Center wanted to purchase the Cupples Station property and demolish the buildings to make room for a privately financed 18,000-seat arena.

Spring break has arrived and college kids are rolling out the barrels. But Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., parent of the world's largest brewery, is urging restraint. The company spends millions of dollars each year promoting what it calls "responsible-drinking" programs. Some are considered particularly relevant at this time of the year, when students descend upon resort cities from Miami to Palm Springs and indulge in brew-guzzling marathons that aren't particularly welcomed by the locals.

Long before the Anheuser-Busch brewery was built in the San Fernando Valley in 1954, Southern California had close ties with the brewing company that today is in the middle of an international takeover battle. Like many other wealthy industrialists of his time, co-founder Adolphus Busch adopted Pasadena as his winter home more than a century ago. There he built the first Busch Gardens, a vast outdoor attraction next to his mansion that he opened to the public.

When Miss Budweiser makes its final unlimited hydroplane appearance Sunday in San Diego, it will be like the New York Yankees quitting baseball or the Lakers closing up shop in the NBA. The big red boats, 30 feet long and weighing 3 tons, have dominated the sport for 42 years, ever since Bernie Little convinced Anheuser-Busch of the value of unlimited hydroplanes.
