Ben Fountain's satire "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" was named the winner of the L.A. Times 2012 book prize for fiction on Friday night at a ceremony in Los Angeles. Katherine Boo's "Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity" took the prize in the current interest category. Add T-Mobile and Sprint to the list of carriers that have announced when they will start selling the widely anticipated Samsung Galaxy S 4. T-Mobile on Wednesday said it will let users order the device online starting April 24 and will sell the smartphone in some of its retail stores starting May 1. The 16-gigabyte version will cost $149.99 up front plus 24 monthly payments of $20, or a total of $629.99. Sprint, meanwhile, will make the phone available for preorder online starting Thursday.

Better call Saul! The final episodes in the "Breaking Bad" oeuvre will roll out on AMC beginning Aug. 11, the network announced Wednesday. Pat Summerall, who was half of one of the best known announcing teams in television sportscasting history as John Madden's broadcasting partner for more than two decades of NFL games, has died. He was 82. Summerall, who lived in Southlake, Texas, died Tuesday at a Dallas hospital, where he was recovering from surgery for a broken hip. Fox Sports spokesman Dan Bell confirmed his death. Known for his deep, resonant voice and a smooth, understated delivery that wasted no words, Summerall worked with Tom Brookshier on the NFL for CBS from 1975 and was paired with Madden in 1981.

SHENZHEN, China - Gov. Jerry Brown, visiting the headquarters of an electric car and bus manufacturer here, announced Tuesday that the company would open a factory in Lancaster, the first Chinese-owned vehicle plant on American soil. The firm, Build Your Dreams, or BYD, will put 10 new plug-in buses on the streets of Long Beach beginning next year after assembling them in the Lancaster facility, with hopes of producing dozens more in coming years. "It's very significant," said Brown, speaking in this southern port city on the last full day of his weeklong visit to China.

Tennessee Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn will lead a House delegation to Britain to attend the funeral of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on Wednesday. Announced by House Speaker John Boehner's office Monday, the trip marks a culmination of Republican accolades for Thatcher following her death last week . Thatcher's conservative policies and close relationship with President Reagan won her widespread support within the GOP . “Margaret Thatcher was one of the greatest champions freedom has ever known, and her funeral gives Americans and friends around the world an opportunity to pay final respects,” Boehner said in a statement.

The Connecticut women's NCAA basketball title is just days old, but the logo on the team jerseys is history. After an Internet leak on a UConn merchandise website accidentally revealed the school's new Nike-designed logo, the university decided to made it official and announced the change ahead of schedule. The school had planned to unveil the new logo on April 18. The new logo features a fiercer Husky, which is good because the furry, lovable version of "Jonathan Husky" just wasn't intimidating enough for a school that has won eight women's NCAA tournament championships under Coach Geno Auriemma -- not to mention the three men's national titles produced under coach Jim Calhoun before his retirement last year.

State Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) announced Thursday that he will run for California secretary of state in 2014, joining what looks to be shaping up as a crowded field that includes other current and former lawmakers. Padilla, 40, was elected to the state Senate in 2006 and must leave the upper house because of term limits next year. "The strength of our democracy depends on the active involvement of all of our citizens," Padilla said in a statement. "Last November, more than 10 million Californians did not vote.

The 10 fiction finalists and six poetry finalists in the running for the 2013 Best Translated Book Award were announced Wednesday. The books were originally published in 11 languages, and were narrowed down from a longlist announced in March. The finalists include a Nobel Prize winner -- Herta Muller -- and a number of authors less well-known in the U.S. One of the goals of the prize is to bring more attention to works in translation, which are sometimes overlooked by American readers.
