The rate of major crimes in this north Los Angeles County region declined slightly in the first nine months of the year, according to figures released Tuesday by the Sheriff's Department. Throughout the valley the incidence of reported major crimes, such as homicide, rape and assault, declined from 376 per 10,000 people between January and September, 1992, to 364 per 10,000 residents in the same period this year. "These are the best stats we've had in a long time," said Sheriff's Sgt.

Reported crime in the Antelope Valley dropped during the first three months of 1991 compared with the first quarter of last year, despite increases in homicides, robberies and assaults, Los Angeles sheriff's deputies said Thursday. The number of reported serious crimes fell 12%. The crime rate, which takes into account the population increase in the region, fell 18%. Homicides increased to eight, up from five reported in the first quarter of 1990.

A pickup truck trying to pass slower traffic on California 138 near Littlerock in the Antelope Valley slammed head on into two cars, killing a man, woman and 3-year-old child, according to the California Highway Patrol. The accident occurred about 6:45 p.m. Saturday near Fort Tejon Road, when the eastbound Dodge Ram, driven by Marthel Aguilar Jr., 21, of Arvin, struck a westbound 2006 Saturn and then a 1992 Toyota.

The Los Angeles County government this week began recruiting businesses to use the county's first public-private telecommuting center, scheduled to open Dec. 1 in the Antelope Valley. The center will provide desk space and computers for employees who would normally commute out of the valley to work. To encourage employers to allow their workers to try the new center, the service will be free for the first year.

Once again Canyon High lined up against a Golden League opponent and once again the Cowboys forcibly removed the team from their path toward the league championship. Canyon (7-2, 4-0) dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage against Antelope Valley, rolling up 294 yards rushing to the Antelopes' 22, and defeated Antelope Valley, 21-14. It was Canyon's sixth win in a row and 28th consecutive win at Canyon.

Freak storms brought mothball-size hail, lightning and rain to the Antelope Valley on Tuesday afternoon and closed three highways elsewhere in Southern California. The sudden downpour in the Antelope Valley caused at least three traffic accidents and created minor flooding on some streets. Witnesses reported seeing hailstones three-eighths of an inch thick, said Bill Hoffer of the National Weather Service.
