UCLA Coach Jim Mora gathered his football team's leaders days before the Bruins played Stanford, and Ryan Hofmeister stood out in the crowd. There was tall and athletic quarterback Brett Hundley, powerful linebackers Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks, massive offensive linemen Xavier Su'a-Filo and Jake Brendal, and Hofmeister, a smallish, little-known junior linebacker. Hofmeister looked around at the group he was in and "was a little flustered. " Who was out of place? Turns out, no one. Captain Crab, a nickname Hofmeister acquired because of how low he runs during drills, deserves a place with the in-crowd, say his teammates, who made him a team captain this season.

Q: Someone has to call it. Bruins 5-6 last 11 games. Not that good. No real progress. Brian Theriot A: An interesting point except UCLA also hasn't exactly been playing Louisville's schedule. Let's examine UCLA losses: Once to Oregon, currently No. 2 in the BCS; three times to Stanford, currently No. 5; and once to Baylor, currently No. 6. Those schools are a combined 22-1 this year. Who you play really does matter in college football; that's why there is so much arguing over strength of schedule.

There was a point during Saturday's UCLA-Stanford football game that it looked like a Loyola alumni game, with Conrad Ukropina making a field goal, Anthony Barr making a sack and Kodi Whitfield making a one-handed touchdown catch. All are Loyola alumni. The Cubs are trying to regain that talent edge by playing a number of promising sophomores at the varsity level this season, most of whom wear a uniform number in the 90s. There's the Tolbert twins, Daniel (93) and David (94)

The California Bears are a not a good football team at the moment. The numbers do not lie. The Bears' defense ranks near the bottom nationally in nearly every significant category. Offensively, California is 106th out 123 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in rushing yards, averaging 113 per game, and 118th in sacks allowed, 3.6 per game. What the Bears do better than almost anyone is throw the football - not effectively always, but a lot. With freshman quarterback Jared Goff at the controls, Cal averages 55.2 passes per game.

Jordan Zumwalt says playing linebacker for UCLA is a lot of fun. He just has an unusual definition of what fun is. Fun, he said, is "making the guy across from you feel like he doesn't want to be hit anymore. It's making the other guy feel inferior. Whenever you stop a team, that's fun. Whenever you hear the crowd cheer for you, that's fun. Whenever you look around and see nothing but bodies, that's fun. " Zumwalt is part of a four-man unit that goes, from right to left, Anthony Barr, Eric Kendricks, Zumwalt and Myles Jack.

UCLA Coach Jim Mora received an explanation of why linebacker Anthony Barr was called for a personal foul in the third quarter Saturday from Tony Corrente, the Pac-12's director of officiating. It led Mora to another question … one that can only be answered by the New Mexico State coaches or offensive linemen. “I'm trying to figure out why you wouldn't block Anthony Barr,” Mora said. Barr came in free during the third quarter Saturday and leveled quarterback King Davis III, knocking him out of the game.
