Anthony who? The armchair speculation about UCLA's defense this spring has centered on how the Bruins will replace Anthony Barr, the All-American linebacker who is expected to be a top-10 pick in the NFL draft. The Bruins have devised two answers to fill that void: scheme adjustments and Myles Jack. Jack was named to the Freshman All-American team by the Sporting News last season, and was the Pac-12's defensive and offensive freshman of the year after a late season run at running back.

UCLA All-American linebacker Anthony Barr returned to practice Thursday, but only to watch. Barr, who suffered a yet-to-be-announced injury, walked into Spaulding Field with a helmet, shoulder pads and cleats. He was injured Tuesday after he appeared to take a hit to the head. Barr was seen doubled over, getting sick before he was led out of the facility. Barr was re-evaluated by a doctor Wednesday. Coach Jim Mora has not commented on Barr other than to say, “He's fine.” ALSO: Aaron Hernandez indicted on murder charge by grand jury Tiger Woods battles hotel bed at start of FedEx Cup playoffs UCLA football: Bruins reach unbeatable level (in sports books)

It is not unusual to find coaches from other schools visiting UCLA practices. It is a little different when one comes from halfway around the world to be there. Daisuke Nishimura , head coach at Kyoto University, and one of his assistants traveled to Los Angeles last week to watch spring practices as a guest of offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone . The two met last summer, when Mazzone was in Japan doing football clinics with a group of coaches. "I love the passion for it," Mazzone said.

Anthony Barr shrugged. He didn't know what the big deal was about. In his first game as a linebacker, all Barr did was have six solo tackles and one sack in the Bruins' 49-24 season-opening victory. "I expected great things out of myself," said Barr, a junior who was a receiver and running back the last two seasons. “People seemed to be making a bigger deal out of it than I am. " Like his coach. "I didn't know what to expect, considering he hadn't played the position in a game,” Coach Jim Mora said.

Headline writers can cease and desist. Reporters should dial it down a notch. Cliche-leaning bloggers need to give this a rest. Barr none, Barr code, raising the Barr ... UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr has heard them all. Pun is fun, folks, but move on. "You hear that stuff and you think, 'How did we get to this point, where people are using my name for jokes?'" Barr said. "Most of them are pretty corny and cheesy. " He has no one to blame for that diet but himself. Barr showed from the start last season that the move to outside linebacker qualified as an epiphany.

UCLA Coach Jim Mora received an explanation of why linebacker Anthony Barr was called for a personal foul in the third quarter Saturday from Tony Corrente, the Pac-12's director of officiating. It led Mora to another question … one that can only be answered by the New Mexico State coaches or offensive linemen. “I'm trying to figure out why you wouldn't block Anthony Barr,” Mora said. Barr came in free during the third quarter Saturday and leveled quarterback King Davis III, knocking him out of the game.

What a difference a (pro) day makes. Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel had a great one, consistently hitting his receivers in stride. Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater did not, struggling with his timing and accuracy in a choreographed on-campus workout that NFL scouts traditionally expect to be polished and seamless. Manziel is the top pick in this mock draft, and Bridgewater tumbles out of the first round. That's based not only on the players' pro day performances, but also on the seismic shift of free agency, in which teams such as Oakland and Tampa Bay addressed (at least for the time being)

The NFL Combine is set to begin on Saturday in Indianapolis, and there's going to be a Crenshaw-Dorsey reunion. Former Crenshaw players De'Anthony Thomas and Marcus Martin are scheduled to participate, as is former Dorsey receiver Robert Herron . Herron, who went to Wyoming, has a great story to tell about overcoming the odds, but he has terrific speed and figures to make a positive impression. Martin, a standout at USC, is one of the top centers in the draft. And Thomas' versatility should be on display.

Jeff Ulbrich, UCLA's linebackers coach, has been promoted to defensive coordinator. He replaces Lou Spanos, who was hired last month by the Tennessee Titans to coach the NFL team's linebackers. Ulbrich, who turns 37 on Feb. 17, spent the last two seasons working with the linebackers, one of the Bruins' strengths with future NFL picks Anthony Barr and Jordan Zumwalt and, in 2013, freshman Myles Jack. Ulbrich also coached the UCLA special teams. It leaves UCLA with one staff spot to fill.

UCLA defensive coordinator Lou Spanos has been hired as the linebackers coach for the Tennessee Titans, the NFL team announced Saturday. Spanos spent the last two seasons at UCLA, where his solid defenses were led by aggressive linebackers such as Anthony Barr and Jordan Zumwalt. The Bruins had 14 sacks in 2011. They had 47 in 2012, Spano's first season, and 32 sacks last season. Before coming to UCLA, Spanos spent 17 seasons as an NFL assistant. UCLA Coach Jim Mora said he would not hire a new defensive coordinator until after college football signing day on Feb. 5. The holiday season has rarely been a joyful time for UCLA. The Bruins have won in only four of their last 14 bowl appearances heading into Tuesday's game against Virginia Tech in the Hyundai Sun Bowl. Staff writer Chris Foster examines the story lines: What's my line? It's far from a hot-topic item, and it's guaranteed not to trend on the Internet: UCLA's success on offense hinges on the play of its line. Will it be an Arizona State-like game, when quarterback Brett Hundley was sacked nine times?

EL PASO - UCLA All-American linebacker Anthony Barr has a different idea of "fun. " This week that describes going up against Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas , a 6-foot-6, 260-pound senior in the Hyundai Sun Bowl on Tuesday. Asked whether he ever had to tackle someone so big, Barr said, "I don't think so, but it'll be fun. " The Bruins are hoping Barr has a rollicking good time. Thomas is the key to the Hokies' offense, UCLA defensive coordinator Lou Spanos said, much in the same way that quarterback Brett Hundley makes the Bruins' offense tick.

Left with an unobstructed path to the quarterback, UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr lifted up USC's Matt Barkley and planted him in the Rose Bowl turf. The play, in the fourth quarter of last year's rivalry game, was the exclamation point in a 38-28 UCLA victory. It was also the unceremonious end of Barkley's roller-coaster college career. He sustained a separated shoulder and did not play in USC's bowl game. "That symbolized where this team was and how we had sort of changed," UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley said this week.

UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr knows all too well how one decision can affect a football life. There may still be a Matt Barkley-shaped indentation in the Rose Bowl turf to remind him. Barr slammed the USC quarterback to the ground last season, separating his shoulder. Barkley, many believed, would have been a first-round pick had he declared for the NFL draft after his junior season a year earlier. But he returned to USC and wound up being part of Barr's NFL application. It was something Barr recalled, and eventually dismissed, when faced with the same should-I-stay-or-should-I-go moment last December.

UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley could look across the city last season and see the perils of staying in school. Former USC quarterback Matt Barkley , whom many thought to be a first-round pick after his junior season, came back for a senior year. The Trojans finished 7-6. Barkley didn't win the Heisman Trophy. He slipped to the fourth round in the NFL draft last spring. A cautionary tale. BOWL TIMELINE: Matchups, schedule and picks Only, all Hundley has to do is look across the locker room to see the upside to playing another season at UCLA.
